Born in 1966 Nick Smith attended a comprehensive school in Brighton before studying medicine. After qualifying in 1988 he worked as a junior doctor for several years before (after a brief stint as a penguin keeper at London Zoo) he switched to teaching.
He taught at four comprehensives, one FE college and a grammar school before becoming Head of Torquay Girls’ Grammar School in 2007, where he remained for 14 years.
During his tenure he took the school from Ofsted Good to Outstanding and the school received many awards, most recently the 2019 Sunday Times southwest state school of the year, the UK parliament school of the year 2020, and was a double finalist in the 2020 TES teaching Awards.
Outside of school he is obsessed with Dartmoor and is one of the few people to have visited all 365 of its Tors and Rocks.
His hope is that the catalogue of incidents described in ‘Head Trauma’ will shed some light on the nature of Headship: the good, the bad, the funny and the ugly. Not only will it show the public why teachers might moan a little, but it will highlight the incomparable rewards to be gained from nurturing young people and is hopeful this will stimulate others to answer the call of Headship
