Nicolás Yunes is a Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Founding Director of the Illinois Center for Advanced Studies of the Universe (initially named Institute for Fundamental Physics of the Universe) since 2019. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1980, he obtained a B.Sc. in Physics from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2003. In 2008, he obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from The Pennsylvania State University. Following a Postdoctoral Research Associate position at Princeton University and an NASA Einstein Fellowship at MIT, he joined the faculty at Montana State University in 2011 as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor, where he co-founded the eXtreme Gravity Institute in 2015. In 2019, he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as Full Professor. He was awarded the Juergen Ehlers Thesis Prize by The International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation in 2010, as well as the General Relativity and Gravitation Young Scientist Prize by the International Union of Applied Physics in 2015. He also received the Fox Faculty Award for Outstanding Research, Scholarship, Creativity and Mentorship from Montana State University in 2017. He is the author of several review articles on tests of General Relativity and over 170 research papers. He is also the producer of the Celebrating Einstein science festival, the Rhythms of the Universe spoken word event, and the Einstein’s Gravity Playlist planetarium show. His book, Is Einstein Still Right? is co-authored by Clifford M. Will. His theoretical research focuses on the use of gravitational wave observations to systematically test Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, and other aspects of gravity, including black holes and neutron stars.
