As a Psychologist, I have been committed to putting behavioral and brain science to work on diverse turf - from street corners to corner offices. Early on, I learned the art of the deal talking clients out of taking me out - as in curtailing my life - while working street corners and Court rooms - not as dicey as it sounds- I was working as a social worker with juvenile offenders and the 'alleged abusers' of my child clients... I lightened it up to work with people like you and me- who were blindsided by life-altering illnesses and injuries- including athletes and physicians whose careers were ended by such curve balls... I taught them to get 'in the zone' for engaging with the challenge in order to face the 'as is' and deal with it proactively, with confidence, focused on the half-full of what they could achieve, and to access the energy to turn their goals and visions into forward motion. While teaching at Dartmouth Med School, my nerd side won out- my research on achieving peak performance in sports and managing the stress of leadership for pro athletic coaches was accepted for presentations at the American Psych Association and Association for Advancement for Applied Sports Psychology. I was recruited from medical settings to work in sports and business in the mid-90s. Yet again- the turf for applying behavioral and brain science shifted. I have had the honor to consult with and 'coach' leaders and teams in nationally-ranked competitive organizations in almost every industry including finance, manufacturing, defense, retail, fashion, medicine, law, pro services, not-for-profit, sports, and natural resources. Along the way, I have been mentored by and worked shoulder-to-shoulder by some of the gurus of organizational and leadership development and top-selling authors- Tom Peters and Marshall Goldsmith. In 2004, McGraw-Hill published my work in user-friendly format under the title of The Winner's Way. Despite the title, it is not about winning. The Winner's Way is a system that is research-grounded- based on behavioral and brain science- that has enabled my clients to understand, identify, and override our natural tendencies to resist change, to resist engaging with challenge and competitors. Using this system, my clients and readers have learned to engage with the 'as is' facing them- the good, bad, and ugly- and to create personal and team bests even in the face of life-threatening challenges. WIth The Winner's Way methodology, clients have learned to move from the 70 to 80% majority - of people who do NOT implement changes or strategies in personal and work arenas - to the 20 to 30% who do implement desired changes. They have also learned to override the natural resistance to different points of view- to bring together the diversity based on our brain shapes and to channel diverse thinking styles into 'one brain' solutions. Consulting and coaching with this model, I teach people to get 'in the zone' for life. Because, from my lens, life is way too short to live it anywhere else.
