Rae Ann Norell received four awards for her book Broke Hungry and Happy. 1) Top 10 Idaho Non-fiction Authors 2) Top 5 Idaho Non-Fiction Books 3) Best New Idaho Authors, all genres, 3rd place. 4) North American Book Awards, 2nd place in the memoir category. She also was one of the Idaho authors whose essay was selected and published in a book entitled: Rooms: Writers in the Attic. Her article "Colorado High Country: Back to My Childhood Home" was published in Road Runner magazine (motorcycle touring and travel) in the October 2014 edition. Rae Ann is a retired clinical social worker, former teacher, and (retired) violinist with the Boise Philharmonic. She had a part-time private practice, specializing in grief counseling, and for ten years, was a facilitator for The Compassionate Friends, a support group for bereaved parents. She gives workshops on surviving adversity and learning to thrive after grief and loss, and stress management for people with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson's. She loves to read, write, andn travel the world, including motorcycling in parts of the western U.S. with her significanant other, Howard. On April 24, 2004, a few minutes after receiving the phone call informing her that her 24-year-old son had died in a triathlon, Rae Ann literally picked herself up off the floor, and began a journey no parent wants to take. She vowed to write a book highlighting David's ten years of extreme kayaking adventures, and sharing his philosophy of living life to the max. With the intent to help others suffering the loss of a loved one, she shares in vulnerable terms, her journey from grief to eventual healing. Rae Ann was raised in Colorado then lived in Boise, Idaho for many years until in 2021 she moved back to Colorado to be close to her daughter and her 3 grandchildren.
