I am a writer, former musician, and photographer. As a writer I have published 12 books and have won the Ernest Hemingway Award for short fiction, been named boxing writer of the year by the World Boxing Board, won the Compass award for article writing, and the Henry Dover Award for fiction in Wales, an award, it turns out, that was specially designed for me. I published a photography magazine, "Calotype" and a boxing magazine, "Boxing PRospects." Most of my time is spent writing novels but I am also an editor/writer/photographer for "Vietnam Cultural Window" a magazine published in Hanoi. At one point I was a decent musician and was voted the best trumpet player in Washington state while in high school. I started professionally in a dixieland jazz band while in the 7th grade. To serve my military time without going to Vietnam I joined the army band but was sent there anyway with the 4th Infantry Division Band in Pleiku where I was twice wounded. (Everyone is a critic) I returned to play professionally for many and have played with such notable groups as Woody Herman and Mel Torme'. I seldom play anymore because I do it so badly but I do occasionally sit in a Minh's Jazz Club in Hanoi, Vietnam. I have won several awards in photography, been named one of the Northwest's best photographers by the Benham Art Gallery in Seattle, an award winner in "American Photo Magazine," and was named International Photography Instructor of the Year by the Russian Photographic Association. I usually shoot color photographs to accompany my articles but shoot almost exclusively B&W, using a Holga and pinhole cameras, for personal work. I divide my time between Vietnam, where I once conducted tours, and Washington state. A portion of what i earn from book sales is devoted to various charities in Vietnam.
