My latest book is Mixed Harvest: Stories from the Human past, narratives of daily life from the arrival of modern humans in Europe through the emergence of urban life in Mesopotamia. In the middle of the transformation from hunter-gatherer to "civilized" city dwellers, our species adopted farming. I call this the Sedentary Divide: before life was one way, after it was different in every way. Now that we can see that the changes were not necessarily good, we must pay attention if we are to survive. I've worked as a technology journalist and technical writer, scripted computer games written for television, published several novels and a hundred or so poems, did story, scenario and report writing for the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, CA, and was for several years a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford Archaeology Center (and published two archaeology textbook-novels). It's generally been a very good time.
