Robin Harrod was born in Hull, East Yorkshire, in 1945. He spent his childhood living in nearby Hessle near Hull, but following his medical training at the London Hospital Medical College in Whitechapel he has lived most of his life in Gloucestershire. After 7 years in London completing his training he eventually settled with his dentist wife in Cheltenham, where he was a General Practitioner in the same Practice until his retirement. His interests included Medical Education and he became involved in the G.P. complaints procedure, serving on the Family Health Services Complaints Committee and worked with the Medical Ombudsman. He became interested in family history when one of his daughters arrived home from school with a family tree to complete, an impossible task as his father was an orphan with no interest in his ancestors. His research did not begin in earnest until both his parents had died, but he has spent the last 35 years searching paper and more recently digital records. He discovered that he was the great, great grandson of the founder of the Harrods store and included the origins of the store in his research. He became involved with a succession of Archivists at Harrods and was able both to access information from them and share his knowledge of the Harrod family with them. His research led to the writing of his first book, 'The Jewel of Knightsbridge', published by The History Press in 2017, which covered the origins of the store and its development whilst the Harrod family was in charge. It contained several unique revelations about the start of the store. This remains the only up to date book on sale about the early history of the store and is on sale in Harrods bookstore. In 2019 he was part of a Channel 5 documentary about Harrods at Christmas. His second book, 'The Misconceptions of Miss Harrod', was published by Austin Macaulay Publishers at the end of February 2021. This is the story of his wayward grandmother, Beatrice Martha Harrod, and tracks her adventures in the late Victorian and Edwardian world. In 2021 he was interviewed about his research by Family Tree Magazine and this is available on line as a podcast https://podtail.com/en/podcast/family-tree-podcast/21-a-remarkable-true-family-story/ In retirement, apart from his research, Robin plays tennis at his local club, follows Gloucester Rugby through thick and thin, and loves his time in France sampling the food and drink.
