One consistent thread in my life involves sitting on thousands of puffy mats and cushions at Buddhist venues all over the UK. (A dilettante lifestyle, my dad says, perhaps fairly.) I’m now a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order. I lead retreats and classes for the London Buddhist Centre and am currently the Buddhist tutor at Eton College. The more career sounding threads include spells as a crime reporter at the Old Bailey, as a solicitor in commercial and environmental law, and as a functional health coach trained with the Kresser Institute in California. Getting down to brass tacks, what I really love is jumping in bodies of cold water, chatting with friends and telling a good yarn. My memoir, The Sound Of One Hand, draws on twenty five years close contact with the Buddhist community. I’ve tried to show the conflicts, inspirations and oddities of practicing a spiritual tradition with a modern mind, in the modern world. It also explores what it was like growing up with only one hand.
