Stacey Marie Kerr, MD, has practiced family medicine, including obstetrics and surgery, in Sonoma County for thirty years. Dr. Kerr is an educator, a physician, a mother, a grandmother, and an adventurer. She has published essays in FringeWare Review, the Sun, and JAMA. For five years she wrote a medical column in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, and she has written on the safe and appropriate use of cannabis as medicine for the blog Hawaiian Ethos. Dr. Kerr has combined her experience with homebirths on The Farm with a passion for preserving a woman’s power when giving birth in the hospital. This philosophy became the basis for her first book, Homebirth in the Hospital, where through dramatic birth stories, Dr. Kerr encourages women’s self-empowerment in their birthing experience, no matter where that birth occurs. Dr. Kerr has lectured across the continental US on birth empowerment. Now she has written a memoir that features her beloved motorcycle, Magdalena Pearl. As Stacey rides the curving highways of the West, she reflects on marriage and motherhood; the cultlike energy of powerful spiritual leaders; the miracles, traumas, and lessons of a physician’s life, including a near-fatal delivery of her own grandson; her long-held belief in the healing power of cannabis, and the vital necessity of love at every stage of life, from birth to death and beyond. Written with irreverence and good humor, Wild Heart is an inspiring memoir for anyone ready to make braver and bolder choices—at any age.
