Stephen Billias is the author of seven published science fiction/fantasy novels, including The American Book of the Dead and Quest for the Thirty-Six, both published by Warner Books. Stephen has also written several screenplays. In 2005 he sold a film treatment with director/writer John Harrison to The Walt Disney Company’s Animated Features Division. In 2009, Stephen co-produced the documentary Seeking the 36 with director/writer Dennis Lanson. Stephen lives in Deerfield, Massachusetts. His hobbies include backpacking trips to the Grand Canyon and the Sierra Nevada range, and the practice of Shintaido, an esoteric Japanese body movement and martial art. From 2006 to 2016, Stephen and his wife Bela Breslau created and ran the Shintaido Farm, a center for the practice of Shintaido. For many years, Stephen’s business life as a technical writer and technical publications manager has provided inspiration for the escapism in his writing. Earlier in his life, Stephen was a street performing juggler and a theater actor, appearing in off-Broadway plays including the American premiere of Screens by Jean Genet at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. His love of theater and film informs his novels’ characters and dialogue, and imbues his plots with the wild improvisational spirit of busking on the street. Stephen was a MacDowell Colony Fellow in the winter of 1984.
