Everything that I am today is the result of all of the love and sacrifices of the three most important people in my life. My Ma, mother, instilled in me the importance of maintaining a calm demeanor, respecting my elders, being kind and compassionate to all and preserving the sanctity of relationships. My Dada , elder brother , always believed in me even when I went off the rails occasionally. He taught me to aim big…real big. His support and belief in my abilities has guided me all of these year. My Baba, father, showed me the value of hard work, remaining humble, persevering and remaining resilient and above all taking care of others. As I turned 50 earlier this year , I can’t help but feel like I’m teeing off on the 10th hole to begin the back 9. If the back 9 is anything like the front, it’s going to be one heck of a ride. There have been a lot of wins and certainly some losses, but I would not change a thing from my first fifty. I was blessed to be born to the most amazing parents, and to have the best brother one could expect ( just pure luck). Along the way, I have developed lifelong relationships with some amazing friends from Darjeeling to Kolkata, from Atlanta to Chicago, from Belize to Dallas. From a professional perspective, I have had the best of mentors all along who have career guided me to some unbelievable successes. I have experienced the most beautiful of places. Growing up among the lush tea plantations in Assam, going to school in the foothills of the Himalayas with the mighty Kanchenjunga serving as a constant backdrop, experiencing the vibrancy and culture of Kolkata, I remain in awe of what a spectacular country India is. From Football crazy Athens, GA, to the serene tranquility of Sausalito, CA, from the resplendence of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, to the sheer expanse of The Grand Canyon, to the best Jazz and food of New Orleans - the USA takes my breath away. New York City is my favorite big city and Savannah, Ga my favorite small city. The gorgeous fishing village of Placencia at the Southern most tip of Belize is my all time favorite place outside of my hometown of Kolkata. The kindness of the Belizean people is unmatched. It’s been an amazing first Fifty - The Brotherhood is my homage to the first Fifty Growing up in a middle class family in Assam India, I had it all - unadulterated love, familial support and the opportunity to study in one of the most prestigious private school’s in India. The Brotherhood is a recollection of some of my experiences during my formative years, with a group of other kids in the most beautiful place on earth. The friendships formed during those twelve years are still the most dear and meaningful to this day. While life has a way of derailing even the best laid of plans, those friendships endure, stronger now than ever. Conversations are seamless, even when we meet years later, and we pick up like not a moment has passed since the last time. While the place is real, the characters are fictional to fit the essence of the story. The Brotherhood captures the gamut of emotions, but perhaps most importantly stresses the importance of “Now” - Of living in the moment. “The past is a memory. It is a thought arising in the present. The future is merely anticipated. It is another thought, arising now. What we truly have, is this moment.. and this.. and this” - Sam Harris. This concept is at the heart of The Brotherhood, a story that has been a labor of love for me, and one that I am very proud of. I hope you enjoy reading the Brotherhood as much as I did writing it.
