My book takes an inclusive approach to biology and psychology, emphasizing the scope of the multitudes of interactions involving everything from epigenetics to language. The remarkable flexibility scientists have discovered means exciting new paths to empowerment everywhere we look. Learning from consequences is an important part of this churning system, and I've been fortunate to be able to contribute in a small way to our improved understanding, having specialized in mathematical modeling of behavior and in nature-and-nurture relations. Fittingly, I'm a scientific generalist with advanced degrees in both engineering and psychology. I'm also an experienced naturalist with a good background in biology. (Even so, the extensive research for this book posed quite a challenge!) The idea is to go interdisciplinary, integrating information across different areas to try to make sense of everything. Many years ago, John Brunner wrote about this activity in his scifi classic Stand on Zanzibar, calling his hero a "synthesist." I thought when I read it how cool that job sounded. I was right . . .
