“You are the biggest disappointment of my life.” That’s what Tom Golden’s father told him on his thirteenth birthday. Back then Golden cursed him… today he’d thank him… had the drink not taken him first. “My childhood wasn't the best, but it made me who I am today… and I’m pretty happy how it all turned out.” Golden’s first job out of college was selling cigarettes and plug chewing tobaccos out of the trunk of his car for the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. Nine years later a Wall Street Journal article pointed him in a different direction. He quit that job, got an MBA and CPA and became a financial statement auditor. “Who does that!” was the refrain from his new colleagues at one of The Big Eight accounting firms he joined in 1982. Little did he realize at the time, but his father had unknowingly prepared him for a career where he would excel. “My father taught me not to trust… anyone or anything.” On Golden’s very first public company audit he discovered something none of the previous auditors found… Fraud… massive fraud. And it changed his life! That experience became the inspiration for his first novel... SUNDAY NIGHT FEARS Fast forward 26 years… In 2008 Golden retired from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as the partner-in-charge of the Chicago Forensic Accounting Practice where he led teams investigating and solving financial crimes across the globe. Those led him into several side ventures: an adjunct professor at DePaul University developing and teaching the school’s first Forensic Accounting Class; a Chicago Tribune front page article about his class, motivated a Wiley editor to sign Golden to author what Wiley would market globally as the seminal guide to forensic accounting investigation: A GUIDE TO FORENSIC ACCOUNTING INVESTIGATION, now in its second edition. Organizations such as the FBI and IRS engaged Golden to teach his fraud detection techniques. Soon he found himself presenting to corporations here and abroad. Once, after a presentation, someone said “You tell a good story, you should write a novel.” So he did! In 2018 Golden published SUNDAY NIGHT FEARS, book 1 of the Sam Halloran Thriller Series. Book 2 in the series, ONE HONEST SOUL, is now available. Both books are inspired by true stories… Golden’s investigations. And there’s a lot more where they came from. So stay tuned.
