Vivi is from Viet Nam. She came to the US in her mid-twenties. Her father inspired her. He was a writer, a poet, and a journalist. A typical Vietnamese father, he ran his family like a tyrant. She learned to communicate with him in writing instead. She was left alone most of the time since she was a child. She found books were her companion when she learned how to read. Her writing began when she was sixteen. Some of her essays and short stories were published in local papers and children's magazines. Influential to her and her thoughts since she was a child was Pearl S. Bucks, the writer.
