In Memoriam - Neil Peart

1952-2020
The Audible staff was saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for the beloved rock band Rush. In addition to his musical endeavors, Peart was also an accomplished author of both nonfiction and fiction, including memoirs and chronicles of his travels by motorcycle through West Africa and North America.

And while I didn’t share his passions for drumming, songwriting, motorcycles, or the Macallan, we both cared deeply about books, about learning, about the natural world, about the art of living well...He’d seen the extremes of good and bad fortune, and Ghost Rider, his 2002 memoir of grief and healing, has reached countless people on similar journeys, many of whom would write emotional letters of thanks. His final sickness was not his first trip down a hard road. "It’s okay, and I’m okay," he wrote to me after receiving his diagnosis. It was a sign of his character, his stoicism, and also of a life lived well."

He was the drummer everyone air drummed to, his parts as unique and memorable as any of Rush’s famous guitar licks or vocal hooks. After the passing of his daughter and wife, Peart retired from music and embarked on a solo motorcycle journey through North America, which he chronicled in his book Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road. Peart later teamed with sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson to publish the novelization based on his final record, Clockwork Angels. Peart proved that until the end, he remained an artist with more brilliant ideas than one art form could contain."
