À propos de cet audio

Close your eyes. I'll close mine too.

Growing up, I was the problem child teachers didn't know what to do with. The troubled teen whose parents wished was never born. The system's made of cracks, and I fell through each and every one, all in a futile effort to protect the family legacy.

They tried to fix me. Doctors… therapists… teachers… pastors... And they failed. Epically.

Now, eighteen, and fresh out of Hell, I'm thrown into the last place I ever expected.

Rehab.

Enter Nolan Dresden. Newly divorced. A recovering alcoholic. Almost double my age. He doesn't think he needs to be here anymore than I do, and all he sees when he looks at me is a privileged little prince.

When a team building exercise takes a deadly turn, stranding Nolan and me out in the wild for a night, not only do we find ourselves bonding over our shared trauma… but surrendering to a current neither of us can escape.

Six weeks. That's all we have together before we have to come up for air. He's worried I'll grow attached. I'm worried he's right.

Like the storms that rage inside me… there's no stopping the inevitable. And when all is said and done, it'll be a miracle if either of us walks away unscathed.

Exiled is a full-length emotional M/M standalone for mature listeners.

Did I read this book the very day it came out? Yes.
Did I preorder the audiobook and listen to it straight through on day one? Yes.
Have I already listened again? Also yes.

All that said, Jessie walker is one of 2 MM authors, IMO, who write stories just so far beyond what pretty well every other mm author puts out. Not that there aren’t other great authors, but she puts pieces of herself into her books that are torn from her being. Her characters all have a distinctly different feel and you can tell she lets them become their own 3 dimensional humans as they are put onto paper.

This book is gorgeous. The neurodivergent representation is impeccably done. I will never stop recommending it.

Two men at the end of their ropes, finding love and acceptance in each other

I felt like Aiden Snow did a really good job narrating the gruff Nolan character. I had not listened to a book narrated by Liam Dicosimo before. I felt like his voice suited the much younger Skylar character, but when he voiced the Nolan parts, he sounded like he was doing an “I’m Batman” voice. It was kind of distracting.

I had seen multiple booktok videos that raved about how good this book is. Perhaps that set my expectations too high. The story was okay, but I felt like there was something missing…like the reader was kept at arm's length from the actual feelings happening.
I found the first half frustrating because Skylar didn't even know he was autistic, and yet his behaviour was textbook for being on the spectrum. I understand that a lot of understanding of what autism is has come out more recently, but to assume he didn't test for it just because he was high functioning, felt ignorant. The way Skylar could speak about his sensory issues and needs in the second half of the book felt much more realistic to actual autistic people that I know.

Nolan's journey also felt like we were missing out on all of his actual feelings and struggles. We meet him after he's gotten sober, and other than him sharing his remorse about his rock bottom moment, we don't see any of his actual struggles with addiction or where it stemmed from. Also, the way his sexuality changed on a dime with almost no introspection felt like his character was being edited. Even though he was very quickly attracted to Skylar, his only real concerns were their age difference. As much as it was nice to see them falling in love in a no judgement bubble, it felt like he brushed past his bi awakening.
