À propos de cet audio

Dear A., I am writing to express my gratitude for your gift. There are no sufficient words, but please accept my sincerest thank you. Yours, R.

She writes me back. I didn't expect that. She tells me she's a lover of chicken pizza and video games, a hot sorority girl with the nickname Sloth. She wants to know something about me in return. She says I owe her. This is how she saves my life. She doesn't even know it.

The anonymity is good. She doesn't need to know me, but I need her kindness. We both live our lives: a letter here, a postcard there. For three years, I escape my demons. Then, one day, I'm pulled back in. I resign myself to what I know is coming, until the girl I'm spanking gives her safe word: sloth. And then the lie I'm living starts to unravel.

Amazing story, get ready for ALL the feels!

I don't really know where to start. I don't write many reviews but after seeing that this book had none on Audible, I took one for the team because I just HAD to do it justice. The plot blew me away, and the narration was on point.

So let me first say that what I got isn't at all what I expected from this story. None of what makes it a great read even gets a nod in the synopsis. Get ready for an emotional roller coaster full of suspense, completely unexpected plot twists and a VERY healthy dose of smut. I mean really, the MCs have libidos on overdrive. That being said, I feel like the smut factor is written relatively well, and neither the storyline nor the MCs developing feelings for one another hinges on their "one-of-a-kind-sexual-compatibility" (*snore*), which in itself is rather refreshing for a smut-heavy romance.

Though we get a generous portion of "sexy alpha/Dom type badboy meets eagerly willing victim on whom he can unleash his sisnister desires", the storyline doesn't follow your typical romance trope of the main conflict going something like "how can I possibly be with this person because of xyz reasons!? I might... *Gasp!* get my feels hurted!" - which is what I expected. I was, however, pleasantly disillusioned of said expectation.

Our story opens with letters between a boy and girl. snail mail style. I wondered why they were writing to eachother, what brought them together. There was a carrot dangled of an acronym (B.T.M) for the name of some service through which she was sending the letters, however we don't get more details on this until MUCH later in the story, though it plays an integral part in understanding the motivations and struggles of the MCs. Another dangling carrot is the reference to a date they both hold dear & celebrate yearly (Aug 7th). We are left in the dark as to the significance of this date and what occurred, though it is clearly important. There are more carrots, but I won't get into details. I just wanted to point out that right from the beginning, we have a good handful of mysterious little crumbs which are yet unexplained, though we get the sense that they hold great import for one or more of the protagonists. I absolutely adore foreshadowing done well, and we have it in spades in this story. Yay!!

But I digress... back to our pen pals. They become close after discovering that they both have the loss of of a loved one in common. They bond over the shared pain of their experience without going into great detail, and support each other as much as their limited interaction allows. They continue corresponding anonymously over a few years as they each lead separate lives. You feel like there is a real connection being forged here, despite the few real details they share with each other about themselves. They don't share their real names or photos. They talk of someday meeting in person, but make no real plans to do so. Switching their communication method to text or email is suggested, but never accepted, so they stick to letters and post cards. Their correspondences are frequently brief check ins while life goes on for both, but we do get the sense that they care deeply for one another. Part 1 closes with the male pen pal "R" not replying for several months and the FMC sending multiple letters trying to reach him, clearly concerned & devastated at the lack of contact.

Part 2 begins by shadowing the FMC (Cleo/Sloth) in her real life, during college and in the midst of the radio silence from her beloved pen pal. FMC grew up very poor and is now in a sorority, trying to maintain a false appearance of having wealth & means. Though her tuition is paid through a scholarship, she has no means to pay for other expenses. in trying to make a better life for herself, she turns to selling pot to her fellow students in order to sustain her lifestyle and remain in the sorority, buy books, help her family etc. Of course this goes awry and she lands herself into some trouble. Enter the MMC (our previously aforementioned sexy alpha/Dom badboy type - Kellen/R), who is orchestrating & taking advantage of the sticky situation our FMC currently finds herself in. He presents as a bona-fide a$$hole, to be honest - and blackmails her into a "business arrangement" which of course includes her sexual servitude to him. *insert mixed feelings about coercion & dubious consent* ... Buuuuut it turns out that Cleo is, in fact, a very eager and willing victim (as mentioned above), and Kellen drops the blackmail act pretty quick, instead turning to bribery (lol). Cleo isn't your typical wilting violet, though. She's not auto-lured by the $$$. Despite the pickle she is in, on the verge of being exposed as a pot dealer which would get her kicked out of college and burn down all her carefully laid plans for a better future, she isn't going to make a rash decision. She obvuously doesn't trust him, and though she feels backed into a corner she's not an idiot. When Kellen keeps coming around she realizes that their chemistry is off the charts and that she genuinely wants to continue getting to know him - both in the Biblical sense, as well as in general. *wink* She takes her time self analyzing whether she actually wants to agree to the arrangement and why. She honestly reflects that she could get attached and get hurt, but that she's going to do it anyway because of her huge lady boner for the guy and hey - Carpe Diem, right?

Kellen is a mystery, leads a double life somewhat akin to Cleo's own sorority girl / pot dealer thing, but seeming much more... sinister. We get more and more delicious foreshadowing crumbs as the two continue to interact. We know that he broke things off with his last sub when he got some bad news, but we're not privy to what the news was. He's been avoiding intimate relationships for some reason, and has developed a playboy, "wham-bam-thank-ya-ma'am" sort of rep. Obviously, he's hot AF. He's quite aloof, a lot suspicious, and clearly has some pretty major mental health struggles. Yet Cleo feels inexorably drawn to him despite all of the glaring red flags he initially presents with. However, by the time Cleo's lady parts drive her to make the decision to agree to his proposed "business arrangement", his genuine personality and sweeter side start to peek through in small glimpses. We get the vibe, along with Cleo, that there is much more to Kellen than his cold and calculating exterior front would suggest (because of course there is, duh!).

I'm not spoiling any more, and don't worry! I haven't actually spoiled much, that's just the setup to the true plotline. Please note that all of the above occurs in the maybe... first quarter or so of our story. Up until now, we're still quite early on into Part 2, and still dealing with a pretty cliche romance arc. and guys - here's the thing - THAT'S WHERE THE TYPICAL ROMANCE STORY TROPES END! And let me tell you, Part 3 is just.... wow! But we're nowhere near there yet, remember? We're still in the early stages of Part 2, I just got fan girly for a sec. Ahem, anyways, moving on...

The tropey-ish set up, though still fun, completely misrepresents the depth of originality, character unveiling, heartwreanching hardships and strong emotion contained within the plot. The rest of the storyline contains refreshingly unexpected plot twists and "ah-hah!" moments where we finally understand all those carrots that were dangled for SO LONG. Sloth brings us the poignant journey of two believably flawed characters who make questionable choices but ultimately do the best that they can as they struggle with the crappy cards life has dealt them. We get a realistically genuine & sweet love that blossoms between our protagonists while we witness their emotional & mental struggles in dealing with life's lemons (while simultaneously feeding our smut addiction - don't deny it, I know you suffer from the same affliction). Definitely worth the read/listen for any romance fan.

Wowza! What an Emotional Rollercoaster!

The writing was phenomenal, as was the character and relationship development. Spice was 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

Part 3 was both heart wrenching and heart warming. Haven't sobbed like that from a book in a long time! My poor little heart needs to recover for at least a few days after this one.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
