Try as he might, Fischer still can't catch a break. Tropica's forces have just perpetrated the fantasyland equivalent of crashing the king's party, kicking over the punch bowl, and making a series of rude gestures on their way out. Unfortunately, they're about to learn firsthand that when you take a bully down to the mat, it's best to make sure they don't get back up. Because their enemies are unearthing long-forgotten powers, and if those dabbling in the resulting destructive chi succeed, they could become even more annoying than the time Corporal Claws hid all of Fischer's pants.

My favourite of the series so far
Évalué le: 2024-12-27
Books 1 and 2 had me hooked to every minute, but they feel like a slow build to the events of book 3. I hope the series continues in this direction. It’s cozy, funny, and riveting. It made me cackle out loud many, many times, and maybe a few happy tears too :’)

Ryan "Quicksave" Romano is an eccentric adventurer with a strange power: he can create a save-point in time and redo his life whenever he dies. Arriving in New Rome, the glitzy capital of sin of a rebuilding Europe, he finds the city torn between mega-corporations, sponsored heroes, super-powered criminals, and true monsters. It's a time of chaos, where potions can grant the power to rule the world and dangers lurk everywhere.

Superhero meets Cyberpunk meets Fantasy
Évalué le: 2024-11-10
This book starts off slow at first - I can see why some reviewers found the plot simplistic - but I think the author masterfully paces the story to us different facets of an interesting and complex world through bite-sized pieces. The plot builds to a compelling conclusion that had me extremely invested in the series. The protagonist is likeable and funny in a blasé way, but slowly reveals layers of deeper emotion that explain his initial attitude and make his character feel alive and whole.
It may not be a LitRPG in the traditional sense - there’s no levelling system or ‘classes’ per se - but I think there’s a lot of similar themes that LitRPG fans will enjoy in this title.
The narrator was just OK. I had trouble with distinguishing the characters apart at first, but I got used to it in the end. He lacks the vocal skills of other narrators (like Jeff Hays), but he also didn’t take any of the charm away from the story.
Recommend!

Incredible story, and somehow… even MORE incredible performance
Évalué le: 2024-10-09
TL;DR: If you’re a fan of casual-listening, monster-progression LitRPGs with a rich, evolving world, get this book.
The writing is so easy to fall into, I was pretty much immediately hooked. The author effortlessly makes you feel invested in each character. In the first book, it’s mainly the MC, interspersed cleverly with asides to other characters that gives you a peek at a much more complex, moving world, and foreshadows events to come.
Amazingly, the narrator is even better. Such a variety of tones in his performance, that at first I thought there were two different male actors! Jeff Hayes brings so much life to this story. This is one of the only audiobooks that I would genuinely choose over paperback, every time.

Improved writing, engaging characters
Évalué le: 2024-06-08
Zogarth’s writing has noticeably improved starting with this book, as the characters grow much more complex and interesting. POV-switching to a new character was one of the main things that made book 1 feel slow to me, but from here on new characters are introduced in such an interesting way that I am hooked from the first sentence! I was disappointed when the book ended, and immediately bought the next in the series :)

Slow start to a great series
Évalué le: 2024-06-08
This first book starts out a bit slow, but not enough to stop me from wanting more. I’m now on book 3, and the author’s writing has definitely found its flow. Performance is top notch. Pick it up if you’re looking for a solid progression fantasy, with an interesting anti-hero protagonist.

Histoire
When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

Realistic protagonists and world… a pleasant surprise!
Évalué le: 2024-05-07
This was a very well-written, story-rich isekai story, more realistic than many in the same genre! The characters are grounded in their respective realities and perspectives, with plenty of room for development, and the writing style is immersive, with a biased narrator.
My only complaint is that the performer read all class and skill titles in a loud, robotic voice. Like, in the middle of a character speaking, certain words are replaced with loud, monotone “system” voice, which was a little grating at first.
Overall I enjoyed the whole way through and can’t wait for book 2.
