Best book ever written for parents of teens

Very engaging to read or listen to (I have both Kindle version and Audible version). This book fantastically addresses all the issues our Gen Z teens are facing. It helped me gain security in the areas where I'm doing things right, but wasn't completely sure, and provided excellent explanations for the areas I was questioning if I should take a different approach.

Histoire
Exquisitely imagined and hypnotically told, The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a love story with the power of legend. Set in the early part of the 20th century, it is an unparalleled tale of abandoned children, radicalized chorus girls, drug-addicted musicians, brooding clowns, and an underworld whose fortune hinges on the price of a kiss. In a landscape like this, it takes great creative gifts to escape one's origins. It might also take true love.

Uncomfortably creepy
Évalué le: 2023-03-25
I bought this book because it was offered as the daily deal, and it had so many great reviews. There was a part about a boy being sexually abused that was written about in a very uncomfortably creepy way. And by a few chapters in, I realized she seems to have an obsession with writing about kids noticing large breasts. I find the story a bit boring & unrealistic. I don't think I want to continue listening if it's just going to be more creepy descriptions.

Histoire
Pictures of half-naked girls and women can seem to litter almost every screen, billboard, and advertisement in America. Pole-dancing studios keep women fit. Men airdrop their dick pics to female passengers on planes and trains. This pornification of our society is what Bernadette Barton calls "raunch culture". Barton explores what raunch culture is, why it matters, and how it is ruining America. She exposes how internet porn drives trends in programming, advertising, and social media, and makes its way onto our phones, into our fashion choices, and into our sex lives.

Évalué le: 2023-01-30
I thought this book was going to be helpful and uplifting about how to escape raunch culture without being harmful towards yourself or others that might have participated in it knowingly or unknowingly. It's true it wasn't judgemental, and I appreciated that. I also appreciated the distinction she made between raunch and sex positivity. I already know about raunch culture. We're surrounded by it. This book explained so much raunch culture in advertising and porn and repetitive about what she states as the ideal body that I ended up getting extremely depressed. I kept expecting each chapter to be different, but it was more of the same. I feel it kind of misses the mark in some ways, but it wasn't bad, and she certainly meant well. One thing that confused me is that she was negative about porn with double penetration in the vagina because it involves 2 penises touching (which seemed biphobic to me), but then she complained people are homophobic (so they aren't allowed to enjoy bi sex?). The last chapter starts out talking about The Women's March, which is an event that totally missed the mark on what women need for a safer, healthier world, and ignores the voices and concerns of women and especially mothers while calling them slurs, so I didn't finish the book. Maybe I will try again another time. I do appreciate how she talked about Trump since so many people minimize and ignore the awful things he says and does about women (including his own daughters).

I love neuroscience, and the content of these lectures is especially interesting. I love how the narrator has so much enthusiasm for the material and teaching. He makes it extra interesting, engaging, with unique examples, and he's fun! I will listen to more of his courses.

Insomnia is one of the more common symptoms of stress and depression. Whether you wake up during the night and have a hard time falling back to sleep, or you have a hard time falling asleep initially, you have insomnia.Insomnia causes unhappiness and worry and, when it is severe and on-going, depletes vitality and concentration. However it is not an illness - it is a behavioural pattern and one that can be changed fairly easily using hypnosis.

I have a very hard time falling asleep. A lot of the sleep hypnosis on audible has things on it that wake me up after I fall asleep. I didn't think this would work, but I don't even know what he says because I fall asleep so quickly.

I have trouble sleeping. The self hypnosis works great, but once I'm asleep, it launches into a half-hour lesson on the benefits of self hypnosis, that slowly wakes me up, and then I can't sleep.

We're all different
Évalué le: 2023-01-14
I've gone for 5 & 10 years of no drinking at different times. I valued my health. There's a lot of addiction in my family. My body can't tolerate consistent alcohol use. But, I did enjoy it at times in my life. I also have a lot of trauma from sexual abuse in my life, which was a contributing factor in escaping from pain. During the pandemic, I was in a difficult situation and started drinking. I have an underlying condition caused by a medical injury from being incorrectly prescribed a vasoconstrictor, and that makes my blood vessels in my brain have life-threatening vasospasms. I had thunderclap headaches. I have a high pain tolerance, so I didn't know to seek help. I continued to lift weights and dance through the pain. I had an injury to my brain and just kept going until I had more (in the ER, they saw injury from previous thunderclap headaches). Once I finally got an accurate diagnosis, I did research and found out that alcohol, caffeine, and thc were causing vasocontriction. Vasocontriction is what triggers the vasospasms, and I also was having seizures and passing out. I could have died or gotten brain damage. Everything we read says that weed doesn't cause death or physical harm. But that's not true for everyone, so be aware of your medical issues before turning to weed in place of alcohol because for some people it's equally as dangerous to health & life, and in some cases even worse. It was hard to quit alcohol, thc, caffeine, and even cbd all at once, but it's essential for my life. I already quit, but I listened to this book on audible. I think it can be helpful to many people because it's honest and down to earth. I also appreciate his take on AA. I have a friend that will appreciate that as well.

It's too basic for what I was expecting
Évalué le: 2023-01-06
I already studied this topic in college, so the science was pretty basic stuff for me, and she's promoting some theories that were already disproven as if they're fact, and based on my life experience I know this is harmful to youth. I don't have anhedonia. I expected more about how to enhance pleasure and sex life. The info was too basic for what I was expecting.
