Histoire
After the climate wars, a floating city is constructed in the Arctic Circle, a remarkable feat of mechanical and social engineering, complete with geothermal heating and sustainable energy. The city's denizens have become accustomed to a roughshod new way of living; however, the city is starting to fray along the edges - crime and corruption have set in, the contradictions of incredible wealth alongside direst poverty are spawning unrest, and a new disease called "the breaks" is ravaging the population.

I haven’t listened to a lot of sci fi, but this book truly took me to another place. Great performance by the reader, so many different voices, personalities!

Histoire
As one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, Alicia Keys has enraptured the globe with her heartfelt lyrics, extraordinary vocal range, and soul-stirring piano compositions. Yet away from the spotlight, Alicia has grappled with private heartache - over the challenging and complex relationship with her father, the people-pleasing nature that characterized her early career, the loss of privacy surrounding her romantic relationships, and the oppressive expectations of female perfection.

Loved becoming more myself along with Alicia

I have been a fan for many years but didn’t know the backstory behind Alicia’s success. She makes life transitions relatable, and is an excellent storyteller. My favourite part of listening to the audiobook were all the ways that the production team took advantage of the medium - the opening letters from family and friends, the piano and singing throughout. Loved it!

Lots of golden nuggets burrowed in cliche

I hadn’t read Sacred Contract - I was hoping this would be an intro to her famous work on archetypes. This stream of consciousness talk by the author assumes a level of familiarity with the content that I didn’t have. I suggest reading her website before listening, or reading her books first.
There are so many fascinating tidbits buried in between random statements like “you need to understand that” and “you all know about that [random fact], right?” and strange inaudible interactions with the audience where she asks questions then disregards what people say. About 1/3 of the talk is her telling people how they are going to get it wrong, misunderstand, blame, etc. That may be true but it makes for a strange listening experience. I found it difficult to listen to for 4 hours for those reasons, but also drawn to do so for the golden nuggets. I wish someone had edited out all the cliches and filler statements. A “best of” YouTube video would be great!
