Histoire
From the vaults of the British Library comes a new anthology celebrating the best works of forgotten, never-since-republished supernatural fiction from the early 20th century. Waiting within are malevolent spirits eager to possess the living and mysterious spectral guardians - a diverse host of phantoms exhumed from the rare pages of literary magazines and newspaper serials to thrill once more.

There is a point where old becomes vintage, and I would argue that these stories sit on the dividing line. These tales are not scary. They are not meant to be. People in the late 19th to early 20th century were fascinated with ghosts and the unknown and seemed to pursue stories that were intriguing, unsettling, even spooky; hence, the birth of weird fiction. These were stories from the popular, and respectable, magazines. If you wanted horror, buy a penny dreadful.
The stories have been carefully curated. They are unique as the editor sought to include stories that were never republished. Some were from quite successful writers and the story quality remained reasonably high, with a couple of exceptions.
The audio publisher has made a messy job of logging books into Audible. They have two publisher names (Isis and Isis Publishing Ltd), one series that only includes a segment of that series (British Library Tales of the Weird), and errors in both the titles and book numbering. Makes them hard to find.
The narration was very well performed, and using a variety of narrators is very welcome in a book of short fiction. My only complaint is the presence of the sibilant 'S' that is so common in audio books. Some books are much better, others are much worse in this regard. I think that quality of the audio could be better and reduce the score by one.

Histoire
From the once-popular yet unfairly neglected Victorian writer Charlotte Riddell comes a pair of novels that cleverly upholster the familiar furniture of the haunted house story. In An Uninhabited House, the hauntings are seen through the perspective of the solicitors who hold the deed of the property. In Fairy Water, Riddell again subverts the expectations of the audience, suggesting a complex moral character for her haunting spirit.

Riddell creates interesting characters, and the interactions between these characters are very well developed. She also creates excellent settings and situations. Neither novel appealed to me at first, but that changed for the better as I progressed through the storyline and began to identify with the protagonist.

Histoire
From atop the choppy waves to the choking darkness of the abyss, the seas are full of mystery and rife with tales of inexplicable events and encounters with the unknown. In this anthology we see a thrilling spread of narratives: sailors are pitched against a nightmare from the depths, invisible to the naked eye, a German U-boat commander is tormented by an impossible transmission via Morse Code, a ship ensnares itself in the kelp of the Sargasso Sea and dooms a crew of mutineers, seemingly out of revenge for her lost captain.

The stories are original and rare, and deal with several approaches to maritime weird. I would rate the overall quality of the stories to be 'Pretty Good'. Any higher and they would be in every collection, yielding a book with no originality. That said, I am knocking the story rating down to 'It's OK' as some stories were really of a lesser quality.

A little better, not much
Évalué le: 2024-01-31
This is not science fiction or even science fantasy as I would define it. It was (weird) fantasy. It is not that the novel exceeded my ability to follow it. I just didn't like it.
Two more to go. I, like a dummy, bought the whole set and then did not look at it until the return date had passed. Otherwise, the last two would be going back.
The narrator (only one this time) did a fine job, and I have no complaints other than the rare inclusion of music. The music was badly done and should not have been used. I won't fault the narrator.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

Ughhh! I just finished this gigantic test of my patience. It was like a long, slow root canal.
There were some interesting plot mechanics that occurred occasionally; however, most of the novel was painful and dull. Worse still, it required continual close reading.
Some characters, such as Alyusha and Ivan were interesting and believable. Unfortunately, many characters were not believable, including all the females, and at best were nutty with rather rambling and somewhat incoherent dialogues. The conversation between characters was artificial, Even allowing for translation, people don't speak like that.
The Table of Contents had grammar and spelling errors, and there was even a timing error. Very sloppy and this should have been addressed properly.
What did I like? The kids were kinda cool, the elder and lawyer speeches were good, and some of the religious content was well worked out. Obviously, this means little to someone who has not read the book, other than the implication that there were few bright spots in this drawn out nightmare.
The narrator did a good job with a very difficult project. He used English country accents as a substitute for the Russian ones. Good idea.

A book written for children, and as a child I first read it, and I was inspired by its noble themes. As an older fellow, The Hobbit still captivates me with its literary magic. It has no equal.
The narrator did a fine, professional job. The songs were nicely done. The audio precision is not as good as it could be, but I'll give it a pass.

Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O’Brian’s now famous Aubrey-Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written. It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship’s surgeon and an intelligence agent. It displays the qualities which have put O’Brian far ahead of any of his competitors.

The author was clearly intending a series and spends a lot of time building up the characters and setting. That's ok, even advisable, but it takes away from the story a bit. Great action scenes.
Good narrator, audio quality was less than perfect.

Scholars, journalists, and politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain - "al-Andalus" - as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: It is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity", Fernández-Morera sets the record straight.

Very good, very important
Évalué le: 2023-12-27
This is a nice balance between academic and popular historical analysis. He provides a lot of evidence to support his positions, and his arguments are clear.
This is a biased history; the title makes that plain. It challenges the common and unrealistic assertion of a lost medieval utopia. Wonderful. Contrary views to popular narratives are so important, especially in our current atmosphere of restricted speech and 'correct' thinking.
I believe he has strong opinions and perhaps some personal anger against an academic environment that tries to enforce a particular viewpoint, but I do not think it fair to say he has an axe to grind. I actually think he opposes that very thing.
The audio quality could be better.

Good storytelling, biased history
Évalué le: 2023-12-27
It's woke. The Europeans never did anything right. The Catholic Church was an oppressor. Get it? This is written by a Cultural Anthropologist who has spent his academic career at a woke university. What a surprise. He doesn't seem to like anyone else either, except the Mongolians that he raises to a pedestal. If they were so great, then I find it strange that all of their conquered peoples hated them...universally and perpetually. That said, I always appreciate a counterpoint to popular narratives. Just tone it down in a general history.
Weatherford is a really decent author. Not a great historian, but if you filter out the propaganda, he has a good style and clarity of writing. There is some very useful material.
The audio quality is not as good as it could be.

In God's Battalions, award-winning author Rodney Stark takes on the long-held view that the Crusades were the first round of European colonialism, conducted for land, loot, and converts by barbarian Christians who victimized the cultivated Muslims. To the contrary, Stark argues that the Crusades were the first military response to unwarranted Muslim terrorist aggression.

Important arguments, some flaws
Évalué le: 2023-12-26
Stark makes some good arguments regarding the objectives and morality of the crusades, and offers a more grounded view of their Islamic opponents. It is nice to see some pushback against the critical theory and anti-Catholicism that pervades in the academic and popular imagination. This is a biased work, but that is conveyed in the title, and that is the reason for its existence.
I was not overfond of Stark's organization. His brief history of the crusades, splattered throughout the book, would have been better to have been omitted. Stick with the thesis and provide pertinent history where needed. I would also have preferred him to avoid areas where he is not well versed. There were a couple of minor points, unnecessary to his narrative, that are easily refuted. Example: Knights in articulated amour requiring cranes to mount their horses? Really? Maybe with 15th century tournament armour. This has nothing to do with the crusades and nothing to do with battle armour of any period.
The audio quality was less than perfect with a pronounced 'S'. Always an irritant. The volume stayed consistent and it was clear. The pacing was good. Loss of one star.
