Histoire
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Found this series quite by mistake but loving it
Évalué le: 2024-03-07
Found this series quite by mistake. Some books are super short (3hrs) so can be expensive based on the Audible credit system.
But the plot and story are complete and I really enjoy the characters and the pace of the book.
Kevin Free does a good job with narration.

Histoire
Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah - its former owner (protector? friend?) - submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit. But who's going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue? And what will become of it when it's caught?

Histoire
It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself "Murderbot." But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

The storyline is not for me
Évalué le: 2024-03-07
I've read every book in the series up to book 7. Just couldn't get into the plot... and I'm a voracious reader. It's just not for me.
RC Bray does a good job although I feel like there aren't enough different voices - if you know what I mean. I typically give him a 5 but this one not so...

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

Storyline stalls
Évalué le: 2022-10-04
First, the good news is RC Bray’s performance is simply awesome. He brings the characters to life and the story is so much better because of his performance.
I’ve read every single book in the series and honestly CA’s work on this series has been ‘meh’. The storyline, like much of the others with exception of a few, repeats itself and offers little progress. It could be so much more! In 14 books, he could have explored each different species and characters in much more detail and filled out the arc. You would think that Skippy and Bishop’s relationship, spanning over 10 years (in the book), would have matured more than just subtly; you would be wrong. There is no further insight into each character after this many books. The useless bantering back and forth between the main characters fill chapters of each book and most of it feels old, well worn and recycled material from previous books.
CA if your reading, some of us really do find this universe you created to be so interesting. The different species are unique and captures our imagination; lighten up on the ’filler’ and fill back in with development.

Histoire
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

I returned this...
Évalué le: 2022-09-08
R.C. Bray is awesome! What a professional. His performance saves this series... honestly!
I've listened to every book in the series. Armageddon is probably my 3rd least favorite book out of the series and half the series so far have been meh because: CA does an okay job of developing the story arc but does so in a very very slow manner (spread over +13 books).
Just as other reviewers have pointed out, more than half the book is somewhat useless, senseless interaction between Skippy and Bishop - it neither develops these characters nor furthers the story-arc. They are just there for comedic relief... but when the same lines are used over and over again, they just get really old really fast.
The 'secret' crush between Bishop and Adams should be explored more, I like the moral dilemma of these 2, but do so in a manner that develops each other's characters more. Chang, Reid, Smithe, their characters need abit more too. More depth is needed in this book for each character to make the 13+ series that much more memorable. I'm in it for the long haul having bought all books. But. I think I'll be returning this one.

After saving the world many times, the Merry Band of Pirates have accepted the inevitable: Earth is doomed. All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

I’ll be returning this book!
Évalué le: 2022-09-05
Good: I don’t mind the general story arc. Mr Bray is a talented artist and his talent does bring the book to life.
Bad: 75% of this story is filler. In fact 75% of the series is useless banter or information arc that never gets used or developed or furthers the storyline. IMHO, the plot storyline ‘moves’ along at a very leisurely pace and in a haphazard way. it doesn’t do a good job of character development.
Skippy’s casual on again-off again relationship with Bishop, the never ending abuse by Skippy towards the humans, and Skippy’s constant forgetfulness and lack of regard to the mission is never fully explored. In over 9 books, these relationships are still surface, and the protagonist and antagonist aren’t fully developed. After 9 books...
Ugly: Having read every book up to now, while still interested in the arc, I have a generally strong dissatisfaction with the filler material that consists of over 75% of this book (and if I'm being honest, all the books). As other reviews indicate, Craig seems to be dragging this series out not for the readers benefit but for his own - come on Mr Alanson!

Histoire
The battle-scarred star carrier Flying Dutchman is finally on her way back to Earth, after an exceptionally successful series of missions that have once again saved the world. The ship needs a serious refit, and her exhausted crew just wants a break from constant clandestine warfare against a vicious and superior enemy. Wishes come true, right? Not for the Merry Band of Pirates.

I have read the entire series from book 1 to this book and will continue. R.C. Bray's performance was great. The author does need to work on new material to keep each book fresh. The story line is kind of like a long soap with especially slow development of the story line. I hope book 8 continues getting better.

The remnants of the Expeditionary Force stranded on the alien-controlled planet "Paradise" get a chance to prove themselves, in a simple off-world training mission with a ship full of teenage alien cadets. When the mission goes horribly wrong and the survival of everyone on Paradise is at risk, the Merry Band of Pirates may have to come to the rescue. Unless they get killed first....

Book 6, way better than Book 5
Évalué le: 2022-07-17
Much more interesting with new characters and a different mission. R.C Bray is great and keeps the characters distinct and invites you into the story. This book is better than 5 but book 7 needs to keep up the same tempo to keep me engaged. Otherwise in my other reviews, it gets fairly repetitive between Skippy and Bishop.

Histoire
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

'Meh' to quote one of the characters of the book
Évalué le: 2022-07-09
RC Bray does a good job of bringing the main characters to life.
The storyline in book 5 is just passable. It seems to me that the only interest here is to extend the storyline and keep getting you to buy the next book. This story arc has been a good book followed by a 'meh' one - to use a terminology used many times in the book. It didn't capture my interest the way book 1, book 3 and book 4 did so the series has been somewhat kind of hit and miss for me. I hope book 6 is better
