Nestled in the hills of West Virginia lies White Sulphur Springs, home to the Greenbrier Resort. Long a playground for presidents and film stars, the Greenbrier has its own gravitational pull. Terrific book
Évalué le: 2024-06-04
This beautiful book recounts the interrelated stories of four generations of a Jewish family in the United States ranging from the early 1900s to 1992. It features alternating perspectives and time periods, a narrative device that is often confusing in other books. Not here. Each character was so well developed that with each change in time, I was instantly engaged in the story of the protagonist of that segment. The lives of the four people - Sol, Sylvia, Dorris and Jordan - are convincing portrayed as the mystery at the heart of the book is gradually revealed. The narration was very good and the overall story was compelling. A terrific debut novel by a very talented writer.

Histoire
When Catherine Saxon, an American correspondent reporting on the war in Europe, is found murdered in her London digs, news of her death is concealed by British authorities. Serving as a linchpin between Scotland Yard and the Secret Service, Robert MacFarlane pays a visit to Maisie Dobbs, seeking her help. He is accompanied by an agent from the US Department of Justice - Mark Scott, the American who helped Maisie get out of Hitler’s Munich in 1938. MacFarlane asks Maisie to work with Scott to uncover the truth about Saxon’s death.

Love Maisie
Évalué le: 2019-04-20
I have listened to all the Maisie Dobbs books. I am always amazed at how effectively the author combines a compelling heroine, an intriguing mystery and authentic historical detail. All the books are terrific and with each one the cast of characters grow over time. Each book is excellent on its own but I would highly recommend starting at the beginning as Maisie’s life unfolds over a period of close to 30 years in the books. Maisie Dobbs is a truly unique woman. This latest instalment is one of the best. I love the Maisie Dobbs series. The narrator is perfect.

Histoire
Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.

amazing saga

The narrator is fantastic. Although I enjoyed this final book of the trilogy, I felt it was not quite as good as the other two. A bit too many battle scenes for me.

Histoire
Always leave a little salt on the bread. Ikey Solomon's favorite saying is also his way of doing business, and in the business of thieving he's very successful indeed. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted and each must make the harsh journey from thriving nineteenth century London to the convict settlement of Van Diemen's Land.

captivating story recounted by the extraordinary and versatile Humphrey Bower. I was a bit wary at first because I was afraid that the book may be anti-Semitic.I am still not sure but I couldn't stop listening. I am about to start on the second book of the trilogy this afternoon.
