Histoire
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

I really enjoyed it, for the most part. The only missing star for the review was because the voices he did for the women... made them sound like really bad phone sex operators. Given the subject matter I didn't think that was ideal.

I chose this because I'd read a more recent book by the author and liked it. From the outset I found it confusing and very hard to follow. The other book started out the same way so I wanted to see it through. It just got more and more convoluted, and when it finally ended my only thought was 'seriously??' I wouldn't recommend. Narration was the only good thing about it.

But behind closed doors, the marriage is breaking, and Charlotte’s husband, Tris, doesn’t even know how much. The story was great.
The actor playing Charlotte wasn't appropriate. She sounded like she was in her 60s. When the 'character's revealed her age I was astounded. It was so bad I was tempted to stop listening.
I'm glad I listened the whole way thru but as a note to the author, get more involved in casting next time as it really took away from the experience.

I was actually given a hard copy of this book a few years ago. I'd been sober a year or so and while the giver meant well, he explained it as "this will teach you how to drink." I was disgusted, thinking that it had taken me 20 years til get sober, why on God's name would I want to play with that kind of fire, and promptly recycled it.
Fast forward a few years. I joined a company where there is a keg in the kitchen, and Friday night drinks are part of the cultural fabric. Within a week I was drunk again, and stayed drunk for the last year. In the recent few months I knew it was time again. I couldn't keep going anymore, loathed the taste of wine, and looking at myself in the mirror. My eyes had no life, I'd gained thirty pounds, and was constantly wondering if everyone knew my secret and was disgusted and disappointed with me as I was with myself. I scoured Audible for a book with the best reviews, with an author that didn't sound like a robot, and low and behold, I was face to face with a familiar cover. I've been sober now just shy of 2 weeks, beginning this book 2 days before I quit and finishing it this morning. I hope I never need to see it again, aside from recommending it to others, but I know it will be there to provide for me again, if and when I do.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

The story was amazing. At first I almost lost interest because of the narrator. I understand accents I live in a multicultural country, but the pronunciation of some words was so harsh I was turned off the book and hedged on not finishing. An example would be if the word were 'greedy' the narrator said 'gweedy'. I get that people have accents and embrace as much but given your stature as an author I can't fathom that you couldn't have found one person that spoke English and whatever other language that wouldn't have bastardized this so badly?
For those of you still reading. I loved it. I was holding my breath at times wondering what would happen next.
My conclusion is that if you're reading this in print you'll be amazed. If you're listening to the audio book you might be annoyed but it's well worth finishing it off!!

The daughter of immigrants and civil rights activists, Vice President Kamala Harris was raised in an Oakland, California, community that cared deeply about social justice. I liked it a lot. Her reading of it was... awkward. When it came to policy type stuff that she knew inside out there were no issues. In other parts it sounded like she was handed someone else's book with no prep time and she plowed ahead with odd pauses, questionable pronunciation, etc. To be fair, I had also just finished Michelle Obama's book so she had a tough act to follow! All said and done I love this lady and hope those that can vote vote for her!

I could listen to her all day. So smart and compassionate. The worst part of the book was when she said she'd never run for office, but I get it. Loved it so much and would recommend to anyone and everyone. Especially Trump! :D

It was ok. This was my first book of his. I found it very disjointed, engaging chapters in odd places, almost at random. It was fine but would I be marking the release date of his next book in my calendar? Probably not.

Histoire
James Baldwin’s stunning first novel is now an American classic. With startling realism that brings Harlem and the black experience vividly to life, this is a work that touches the heart with emotion while it stimulates the mind with its narrative style, symbolism, and excoriating vision of racism in America. Moving through time from the rural South to the northern ghetto, Baldwin chronicles a 14-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935.

Admittedly as detailed in an earlier review, I downloaded this book as a result of reading The Sun Does Shine. I recall in that book the prisoners' feedback was that it was too religious. Now I get what they meant. I'm sure a lot of it went over my head but I felt privileged to have read what I did and regret nothing. Definitely a window into a world I'd never have looked thru otherwise. Baldwin's writing was poignant and the narrator's voice let me feeling like I was standing there and witnessing something I had no business seeing.

In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

I loved this book and recommended it to anyone who would listen to me, and even those who seemed reluctant. I can see why Oprah is such a fan. It was outstanding and part of me didn't want it to end, as much as I wanted it to hurry up and be over so Ray would be free. In Canada we do not have the same racial dynamic, or prejudice, so this is not something I had grown up with, but it broke my heart all the same. Side note: I also used Ray's book club as a reading guide and promptly downloaded Go Tell It On The Mountain.
