Histoire
When Andrew stumbles upon Jamie’s house, he’s injured, starved, and has nothing left to lose. A deadly pathogen has killed off most of the world’s population, including everyone both boys have ever loved. And if this new world has taught them anything, it’s to be scared of what other desperate people will do . . . so why does it seem so easy for them to trust each other? After danger breaches their shelter, they flee south in search of civilization. But something isn’t adding up about Andrew’s story, and it could cost them everything.

A masterpiece in storytelling - a "must-read" for fans of the genre.

This audiobook was truly spectacular. Historically I've shied away from the post-apocalyptic genre - too jaded from the Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and similar stories to want to dive into the genre again. However, this audiobook was recommended to me by a friend, and I'm happy that I took the leap of faith, as it's become one of my all-time favorite novels.
Erik J. Brown captures both the innocence and awkwardness of teenaged friendship perfectly, combining it with the terror and suspense of a post-apocalyptic landscape that leads listeners through a roller-coaster of emotions. The way that Brown perfectly portrays the protagonists Andrew and Jamieson is stunning, and the masterful character development they undergo as they lead us on their epic journey is nothing short of spectacular.
Brown also does a tremendous job of immersing us fully into post-apocalyptic USA. The settings of each chapter are gorgeously fleshed out, and all of the different locales the two boys visit are described in immaculate detail. Initially, many of the details regarding the setting are seemingly insignificant, but no detail is forgotten, or dismissed. And this consistency in wtory-telling truly places the reader/listener directly in the centre of the story.
While I certainly am known to be a bit emotional - I can say that this audiobook affectly me profoundly. There were times where tears were flowing freely down my face, whereas other instances had me full-on belly-laughing. There were also tender and sweet moments that made me smile, and the villains in this novel had me gripping my steering wheel in anger. Brown does an incredible job of immersing you in the emotions of his characters, and I can say that this was truly one of the best audiobooks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
All That's Left in the World is a charming, intelligent work of art that has set a new standard for both post-apocalyptic story-telling, and the YA Romance genre as well. Five stars all the way, and the highest of praise for Erik J Brown for bringing this wonderful story to life.

Histoire
Seventeen-year-old Zach was visiting his uncle in a small Montana town when a mysterious illness ripped through the world. Most died, but those who survived the Infection became mindless killers, spreading the disease with a single scratch. Now, a year later, civilization lies in ruins, and Zach is the town's sole survivor. Desperately lonely, he longs to return to his family in Seattle, but his fears hold him captive.

Paul Michael Winters' foray into the post-apocalyptic genre is a rousing success - one that led me through a roller coaster of emotions, and left me wanting more in the end.
Winters must be praised for the exceptional way he portrays the two main characters, Aidan and Zach. They are both lovable, endearing characters who are certainly flawed, but are flawed in a way that makes the story more endearing and believable. I must also commend the author on his knowledge of and research regarding the setting of the novel; the pictures he painted regarding the different locales, and the accuracy of their descriptions helped to immerse me fully in the story.
Together in a Broken World, while not an absolute "must-read," is certainly an audiobook/novel I'd recommend to anyone who is a fan of post-apocalyptic adventures, or those who enjoy reading M/M romance novels. The sexual content is kept to a relative minimum, but I still wouldn't recommend this jovel to anyone under the age of 16, as some themes may be a bit too mature for younger audiences.
Overall this was an absolute pleasure to listen to, and I look forward to reading more of Winters' works in the future.
