Histoire
Not long ago, Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were similar enough to her own that many people confused her for the other. For a vertiginous moment, she lost her bearings. And then she got interested, in a reality that seems to be warping and doubling like a digital hall of mirrors. It’s happening in our politics as New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers find common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting “the children”).

I loved this book. Rich with insight and great thought. And she reads her own words with depth and clarity.

Histoire
Calliope Adham—young, strong-willed, and recently widowed—is schoolmistress in the village of Molyvos when Hitler's army invades Greece in 1941. Well-read and linguistically gifted, she is recruited by the Germans to act as their liaison officer. It is the beginning of a personal and national saga that will last for several decades. Calliope's wartime duties bring her into close contact with Lieutenant Lorenz Umbreit, the Wehrmacht commander. The schoolmistress is an active member of the Greek Resistance, yet her friendship with the German blossoms against all odds.

I loved this book.
The story. The characters. (Especially the main character.) The setting. The history. I often felt like I was right there in Greece.
This could make a fine movie with the right director. And a strong female lead.
First, I read the book. Then I listened to it in Audible. There were sections where the writing was so moving that I re-listened several times. I was so sorry when it was finished. It is one of those rare books that I think I will read and/or listen to again. Kudos to the author.
