I feel I need to write a slightly more critical review than the ones I see here. I have taken into account that it was either originally written in probably Danish then translated or the author does not speak English natively.
I won't get into spoilers but there are scenes that are hard to swallow even for a zombie fiction. Character motivation or dialogue that is bizarre and obviously bizarre just to push the story along and create drama. It feels unnatural.
A couple times the story references the United Nations having/using nuclear weapons. The UN does not have a nuclear arsenal or a standing military.
Those my issues with the story off the top of my head. I do think it is worth a listen and I thank the author for their creation.

This should be more widely enjoyed. If you are a fan of HP Lovecraft I think you will enjoy this very much.

This is not a 4/5 audiobook. I feel for the voice actors who participated. I don't believe the author actual did any sort of research on how people respond in crisis. Wildly poor story. Comparing it to World War Z is ridiculous. The format is all that is in common. WWZ has a far more out there concept but at least captures people behaving like people. Mass murder for no reason amongst a large group of people is a lame concept.

I am always excited when I get a chance to hear a Laird Barron tale. Rarely do stories or ideas haunt my mind after hearing them. The author is a master of planting nightmares in the garden of the mind.

Laird Barron deserves far more attention than he seems to receive. I love his writing style. His subject matter has a gritty kind of realness. Mr. Barron captures the toxic and corrosive side of humanity that allows for a kind of horror that leaves you hollowed out and questioning.
I always find myself wishing his tales won't end. They are not predictable or route like most fiction seems to be. All hail the King.

The pyre is arrogance, sorrow and selfishness. The flame is a force that is obscene and unknowable. I enjoyed the mix of the simple horror that is the human condition with cosmic. Well worth the ticket price. Hey ho let's go.

While it may be an end of the world story it should not be compared so closely to World War Z in my opinion.
WWZ is a powerhouse in the genre. Sleep over is alright on it's own merit but does not approach WWZ.
Often times it is hard to follow what is happening and when. Mixing semi science and unreliable narrator's (due to sleep deprivation) gets murky. I also had issue with the lack of solid time frame for the event in question. After completing the story I still don't know if it was weeks or months. If months it is hard to believe.
