Histoire
When Helene Hanff makes an innocent inquiry about the possibility of purchasing hard-to-find books through Marks and Co., Booksellers, she begins a 20-year love affair with Frank Doel, the proper English bookseller who answers her letter and sends along her first order in the fall of 1949. They are two very unlikely correspondents.

The many voices are essential

I've seen the movie, but a review I read said the book is better. I didn't realize until the very end why that was. Throughout the book, you pick up little things where the movie influenced the story or embellished it based on the letters but the ending was completely different and very impactful. What a beautiful story and talent. Helene Hanff wrote other books. Hopefully, they'll get posted here someday.

Histoire
Machiavelli wrote The Prince for his ruler as a guide for gaining and keeping power. Central themes of his essay are the relation between politics and ethics, what the best form of government is, the importance of the Church, and the growth of Italy as a nation-state. The word "Machiavellian" often suggests sinister motives, but some scholars question this traditional interpretation.

If you like having an author's word explained

If you like having the authorial voice of that writer analyzed and described to you... You'll like this. The last chapter makes you grateful for the additional information. Otherwise, you can decide for yourself. I looked online for the original "Discourse on Voluntary Servitude," and this seems to be the common theme. It was just a pamphlet circulated 500 years ago. Otherwise, it was significant and quite relevant today! The voices were a nice touch.
