Compelling characters are what keeps readers turning pages and buying books—from fantasies to mysteries to the great literary novel. But how to do you create characters that feel three-dimensional and real on the page? Counsellor and author Eileen Cook shares common psychological techniques to help you build your characters and take your story to the next level. This book covers understanding your character's backstory and how it impacts their choices in your book by doing a structured counselling interview, personality structure, and the Stages of Change.

Good ideas to imagine characters

Liked the author’s suggestions and questions to ask a fictional character. Often I wanted writing examples or points how to get a character to “know” something. I know they are specific to each writers project. I liked the questions she posed about each chapter. Well worth listening to and I think I will need to get the printed version so I can analyze each chapters detailed questions.

Fascinating and eye opening

The book made we aware of so much of our history. How information not truth can alter the course of millions of people. Mostly false information can lead to horrible human suffering. Although the book was not concise it gave me depressing outlook to our future.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

The science seemed plausible and likely based on climate change research. It was a long book and could have been shortened and not omitted any values of the story. Inspiring and depressing of our own future.

Histoire
In the summer of 2022, Lee Berger lost 50 pounds in order to wriggle though impossibly small openings in the Rising Star cave complex in South Africa—spaces where his team has been unearthing the remains of Homo naledi, a proto-human likely to have coexisted with Homo sapiens some 250,000 years ago. Lead researcher Berger had never made his way into the dark, cramped, dangerous underground spaces where many of the naledi fossils had been found. Now he was ready to do so. Once inside the cave, Berger made shocking new discoveries that expand our understanding of this early hominid.

The story of discovery and personal challenges to reach the caves is fascinating. The author did a great job of narrating his book. I highly recommended this to those who love reading about early hominids and adventurers physically and emotionally.

Histoire
Artificial intelligence is smarter than humans. It can process information at lightning speed and remain focused on specific tasks without distraction. AI can see into the future, predicting outcomes and even use sensors to see around physical and virtual corners. So why does Intelligence frequently get it so wrong? The answer is us. Humans design the algorithms that define the way that AI works and the processed information reflects an imperfect world.

The first half was very good. However the final 3 chapters left me feeling not optimistic as the author intends but the reverse emotion. Can humanity as a whole really start behaving well to each other, the earth and all beings on it? He has no doubt of the super human intellect of the AI and how we choose to work with it to our collective advantage will make or break us. Well worth reading for it opened my thoughts to the infinite what ifs of humans choices.

Histoire
The story of humanity is the story of textiles - as old as civilization itself. Since the first thread was spun, the need for textiles has driven technology, business, politics, and culture. In The Fabric of Civilization, Virginia Postrel synthesizes groundbreaking research from archaeology, economics, and science to reveal a surprising history. From Minoans exporting wool colored with precious purple dye to Egypt, to Romans arrayed in costly Chinese silk, the cloth trade paved the crossroads of the ancient world.

The book shared some details of something I thought little about before listening to it. Now I see textiles totally differently and how technology and wealth we tied to clothes bed coverings, rugs and everything else made with string. Wow worth the listen.

Histoire
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Intriguing read. You feel like you are with the characters. Some fiction but lots of amazing truth to the story. What is our reality anyway? This book makes me think about the authors philosophy and wonder what if this might be more than just a tale. Loved the book.
