Whether you’re straight or queer…whether you’re single or partnered…you should really read this book. It serves as an incredible introduction to ideas around feminism, sexuality and relationships.

The book is framed through a personal and engaging narrative. As the author experiences the ups and downs of her own life, we get to experience what happens when the social theories she’s grappling with mix with her real life. Things get confusing and messy. Relationships and desire aren’t black and white. People often act in direct contrast with their own beliefs. We hurt ourselves and then wonder why. This brings up big existential questions, but in this book Willis Aronowitz brings these things down to earth for us and into focus. She lays bare her deepest pain and insecurity, and we get to learn along with her.

Often I have a hard time explaining the nuances of my relationships to friends, and helping friends navigate their own struggles through a feminist lens. In the future, I’ll just hand them this book.

If you are interested in sex, open relationships, women’s liberation, feminism, pleasure, and how all these things can be confusing, painful, essential and beautiful at the same time…this is a must read.
