Histoire
Taken from their families when they are very small and sent to a remote, church-run residential school, Kenny, Lucy, Clara, Howie and Maisie are barely out of childhood when they are finally released after years of detention. Alone and without any skills, support or families, the teens find their way to the seedy and foreign world of Downtown Eastside Vancouver, where they cling together, striving to find a place of safety and belonging in a world that doesn’t want them.

A very thin soup
Évalué le: 2022-03-20
for stories with great potential. I listen not read and probably just as well as it is stilted in narration which usually means awkward writing. this is a collection of profiles, portraits that do not add up to a story.
There is importance in the final chapters with the discussion of long lasting trauma. This is a problem that is real now. Rehashing
miseries of the past is no way to go forward.

A Need To Read if dealing with BPD
Évalué le: 2022-03-17
But the patronizing voice of reader, author makes the situation even
more depressing. Daughters are devilishly difficult even without BPD. This reader rings the death knell and leaves little home. We all know BPD will never end completely but he nails the coffin.

Histoire
A stand-alone battle book, set this time in the eighteenth-century in the rebellious colony of Massachusetts. This new novel takes place during the very early days of the rebellion, or the War of Independence, before Washington and before the organization of a colonial army. A small British fleet with a few soldiers on board had sailed in to be met, to their surprise, with an overwhelming strength of local militia.

Everything you did not know about New Ireland

First rate tale, albeit bloody about the years following American Revolution and what would be Canada. A story that is true and rarely told.

Histoire
When two English brothers arrive at a Barbados sugar plantation, they bring with them a darkness beyond what the slaves have already known. Washington Black - an 11-year-old field slave - is horrified to find himself chosen to live in the quarters of one of these men. But the man is not as Washington expects him to be. His new master is the eccentric Christopher Wilde - naturalist, explorer, inventor and abolitionist - whose obsession to perfect a winged flying machine disturbs all who know him.

Around the world in the 1830s
Évalué le: 2022-03-17
Great tale by a writer who actually read a few books herself. The characters were Dickensian in depth and their adventures were Jules Verne-ish in execution. Those tropes were strong backs to carry conflicts of class, race, science forward during the turbulent 1830s. Darwinism, photography, flight biology,...you name it was being born out of revolutions just a generation or two prior. Washington's desire to find his place was impeded by his race. Tich's was hampered by his priviledge. This fantastical story brings both to resolution.

Portraits in need of an Editor
Évalué le: 2022-03-13
Author delivers very accurate depictions of social and economically disadvantaged residents of a sprawling Canadian suburb. it is a series of vignettes that a good editor could have helped shape into a provocative novel. Alas, the characters that were so well drawn fall back into the shadows of their original desperation.
