tough one to review. while some of the concepts and ideas presented in this book are rather brilliant and will stick with me, it is told through the lens of a riddle being read through smoke. it almost lost me right off the get go because of the lack of cohesion in the story. after I realized that the story is delivered in bits and pieces throughout the book with little pattern of delivery then I could appreciate it more. definitely a ton of big concepts and philosophy on reality, fate, existence, etc to make your brain work hard. felt like if I stopped paying attention for even a sentence I would miss something incredibly important to the plot which made for a very concentrated listen. I think this is one that would need multiple reads to really pay off, though I don't think I have the stamina for a second attempt. still, the situation and characters were interesting and not often you find a scenario combining vampires, cyborgs, ai, personality disorders, etc into one plot line. I also found the narration a bit mopey, as if the whole book was being read by Eeyore from winni the pooh. everything sounded depressed and very ho-hum which worked at times but not for the whole book. if your looking for a thinking person's Sci fi, this might be for you.

Histoire
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Good book, worth the read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. most times when I assumed I knew what the next twist would be, I was glad it went a different route. I can't help but hear everything R.C. Bray read in commander Joe Bishops voice though, which honestly is fine with me :)
