many great interviews
Évalué le: 2024-12-31
it was solid with many interesting interviews. I kept hoping for more analysis or dissection from the author, but, overall it was good. The narrator was amazing, able to verbally smirk, roll her eyes, and share deeply personal thoughts and feelings of the various contributors as if they were her own.

Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Kara was soon winning a World Championship medal, going to the Olympics, and standing on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. But behind the scenes, Salazar was hiding dark secrets.

Heartbreaking, inspiring, redemptive, triumphant.
Évalué le: 2023-03-29
A brutally honest and painful memoir that taps into hope, dreams, loss, injury, shocking abuse, and the beauty of a run.
Kara had me in tears at a number of points.
It also lays bare a broken system and a wildly corrupt company, with a hope that things can change; my swooshes have been gone a long time, but a renewed call for a boycott is in order!

Histoire
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

An exceptionally well-executed story
Évalué le: 2021-06-24
The narration was superb.
The story meanders a bit in the early going, but there are moments of exceptional prose bordering on literary art.
The pace triples in the final quarter.
It was a fascinating snapshot into cultures that are relatively foreign to me: Upper-class African American, legal, East Coast.
A little more character development would have been helpful, and would have aided the punch of the final scenes.

Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

Can't bring myself to finish it. Self-confirming drivel which attempts to draw on poor readings of history to make dubious points. If he'd stayed within his expertise it could have been fine.

Histoire
Mesopotamia is the ancient name for the region that is now Iraq, a remarkably advanced civilization that flourished for two-thirds of the time that civilization has existed on Earth. Mesopotamians mastered irrigation agriculture; built the first complex urban societies; developed writing, literature, and law; and united vast regions through warfare and diplomacy. While civilizations like Greece and Rome have an unbroken tradition of written histories, the rich history of Mesopotamia has only been recently rediscovered, thanks to the decipherment of Mesopotamia's cuneiform writing less than 200 years ago.
