After serving as a US Marine during World War II and attending college on the GI Bill, Sam Keith decided to seek adventure in Alaska as a laborer on the Adak Navy base. There he befriended Dick Proenneke, whose shared love of the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance quickly bonded an alliance between the two. Together they explored the wilds of South Central Alaska, while working on the Navy base, hunting and fishing with friends and breathing in the great outdoors.

If you are interested in this book because of One Man's Wilderness, you will not be disappointed. Sam's love of Alaska is the same shade as Dick Proenneke's, and his adventures are no less entertaining and fascinating. Hearing about their friendship painted Proenneke with more depth as well. I feel closer to both the man I read about in One Man's Wilderness and the man who wrote him into my life.
The narrator was clear and I enjoyed the cadence of his voice.

Easily one of my favourites

This book will make you dream to leave the pressures of society and retreat into the beautiful and harsh clutches of the wilderness. The narrator fits perfectly with the prose. I feel I have shared in something intimate with the author…as if I were there experiencing the wonders of Alaska myself.
