Jack Valentine seemed to have it all. He made good money as an ad man and looked good doing it. He had a hot apartment, cool friends, even a slick car - at least until the hectic Monday morning a truck smashed into it, sending the critically injured Jack to the hospital. Everything happens for a reason, though, and Jack’s reason reveals itself in the silver-haired cancer patient who becomes his roommate one evening. The elderly man, Cal, shares his life story - one not dissimilar to Jack’s - of material wealth masking a gaping hole within.

Painful

A rehash of quotes and ideas from others, wrapped in a half-baked story. Read/listen to this only if you've never read a book on philosophy or religion before.

Histoire
One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Very interesting speculative fiction. A little different from most of Stephenson's work. Narrator was fantastic.

The Fundamentals
Évalué le: 2022-01-11
Financial planning basics wrapped in a mildly entertaining story. The information is geared toward the US system, but with a little help from Google, you can find the equivalents in other countries (e.g. IRA vs. TFSA)

Pleasantly Surprised
Évalué le: 2019-12-07
This was my first time reading Kurt Vonnegut and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed his writing style. The story is somewhere between Snow Crash and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The narrator did a fantastic job, even differentiating between the same characters at different times of their lives. Worth the read.

Great story. Best narrator.
Évalué le: 2019-08-16
Fantastic book. Really good science, the author clearly did a lot of research for it. The middle of the book drags on a little, but power through it, it's worth it. Mary Robinette Kowal is the best narrator I've heard yet. Will Damron did a great job as well.

Histoire
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

This was a great book, with a ton of relevant ideas and strategies. I took more notes while reading this book than I have from the past 10. However, the author's personal feelings and apparent bitterness are shared too frequently for my liking. He calls out many people that he doesn't agree with or like. This detracts from the ideas in the book.

Histoire
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Solid Sci-fi

Good science + good fiction + good narration = great book. Worth a listen if you like sci-fi that's heavier on the sci. I liked the writer's inclusion of economics too.

Histoire
God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers.

Amusing summary of the bible.
Évalué le: 2018-04-30
Captures the essence of the bible in often hilarious ways. I couldn't imagine a better narrator for the job. Don't listen to it if you are easily offended or if you take your Christianity (or yourself, or life) too seriously.
