Histoire
The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death. In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Hard to lose RC Bray but keep going, it gets better as it goes and the story is really good.

No Rc Bray but still quite solid entry
Évalué le: 2024-07-19
Not having Rc Bray is just a drawback, but not a substantial one. The story was solid, had some cool flashbacks of the old gang, and slowly introduced some new characters for this new chapter. Overall it was quite good, once you get past the first our and your brain switches narrators.

Histoire
The Genevians are at war with Nietzschea...and they’re losing. In a last-ditch hope, the Genevian mech program was founded. Its goal to augment humans into cyborg fighting machines; mechanized warriors sent to hold the front lines against an enemy that was storming a hundred worlds. Yet few wished to undergo the brutal process, and so criminals were used, their minds enslaved by control chips and obedience enforced through discipline.

Mildly entertaining but lots of lots of squandered potential.
Évalué le: 2024-03-12
Started off great, really enjoyed the first few parts but then this dull monotony crept in. Every opportunity for tension and epic action was glossed over. The battles were short and not very detailed, the protagonist hardly struggled at any points cause she is just so OP. She half stumbles into destroying a whole fleet and a planetary system while making jokes. Coukd have been great if some of those battles were more fleshed out and the solutions were inventive not just instantly available. The whole series wraps up in less than 15 minutes, there is build up to a final fight against a meched out evil emperor that just ends in 15 seconds with no fight at all. Really dissappinting way to end the whole series. Overall a fun listen, but nothing to write home about.

Histoire
Five superior star nations struggled for dominance over their galaxy, unaware a more significant threat punctured the fabric of space and entered from a parallel universe. This new threat had a name: the Cepha. They conquered entire galaxies, consumed and exploited worlds, and enslaved sentient beings. Humans, Kazarians, Zorlons, and the other minor star nations' only chance of survival against the Cepha was to forget their differences and stand together.

Started off well enough but after a while you realize that the the entire book essentially boils down to. And then... This happened, and then... That happened. Why are zorlons and humans allies? Unclear, why are all star nations kingdoms? Unclear. What are the motivations of every single bad guy? Greed. A princess commits genocide and everyone forgives her instantly because reasons! Why is democracy dead in the whole galaxy? Because this writer should have stuck to fantasy. Two prince's that grow up together as cousins, one turns out to be the most noble and competent, and the other is a douchebag, despite growing up together like brothers, the douche hates his cousin, why? Unclear, never brought up. Things just happen, why are they happening? Who cares, what are the characters motivations or logic? Who needs that. One second the most noble general and friend of the family will do anything to protect the royals, the next he is ready to kill the competent one, why? Because he liked the douchebag mom more. Why would it matter if he would be a terrible king. Just things happening for no rhyme or reason. Zero foreshadowing, zero backstories on anyone who isn't a main character, and worst of all, boring uninteresting space battles. These ships fired, whose ships blew up, thsoe ships maneuver and fired again. It all feels incoherent and underdeveloped on a grand scale. Super dissapointed in this book. 2 ouf of 5 * only because I managed to actually finish it, mostly out of frustration.

Story was pretty generic as a marine going through basic but the book is well write the characters feel real and interesting and even though the plot was lacking the action was great and it felt like a good start to a series.

First came the development of the Personality Matrix Construct—PMC, transferring human consciousness into a machine. It changed the galaxy and the way wars were fought. Then something went wrong with PMCs and the Federation Wars toppled the galactic order. PMCs became a menace to be hunted and exterminated.

The first book was pretty good, but the writing just got worse and worse in book two and three. Shallow, no depth, the plot was simplistic, too much exposition dumps, too repetitive, zero cool factor. Had a really hard time finishing it.

Good performance but story was a big meh.
Évalué le: 2022-11-23
The plot beats were few and far between, pretty predictable and utterly simplistic. Technology and unimaginative, one chapter they have medical nano bots the next they are out of bandages. All the ships have artificial gravity but when it comes to anti gravity particles they say gravity is a mystery and they don't understand it. Battles were written as, "they are attacking we are defending, we took out the main objective now we won" zero twists or surprises in this one. Had a hard time getting through it. The ending was really abrupt and unfulfilling. Overall story is a 4/10 for me. Would not recommend.

Histoire
Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade his mind in the war. And one of humanity’s heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. Eighty years ago, Earth was destroyed by an alien enemy. Many escaped, but millions more died. So mankind created enhanced humans such as Idris - who could communicate mind-to-mind with our aggressors. Then these ‘Architects’ simply disappeared, and Idris and his kind became obsolete.

Pretty good listen but the plot is a miss for me.

The performance is great, each character feels unique and alive, great execution on emotion and humour as well.
The story as a whole is pretty interesting, the universe is enthralling with different factions and alien species, but it loses me when it comes to characters and plot. My main gripe is with the protagonist, he seems wholly impotent. As the plot move along the protagonist is like a leaf in the wind, all the supporting characters are there to pull him along, save him from every bind, figure out every problem and solve every mystery. Ultimately it feels like he lacks the will and strength to act, he exerts very little authority and half the book is about exactly whose slave will end up being. Other than that the book was pretty enjoayable.

Histoire
The galaxy follows a logical structure. Legion Dark Operator Kel Turner believed that. To know the order of battle and how an enemy unit was organized was to know its purpose and how to destroy it. That logic existed down to the smallest scale, down to what made up life itself. To know a molecule’s structure was to know its function - they were one and the same. It was no different for Kel. He was Dark Ops and Dark Ops was him. But the covert action arm of the Legion is changing. And so is he. And if Dark Ops is no longer the same, how could Kel be Kel?

Underwhelming ending
Évalué le: 2022-01-07
For the fifth book of an action series, and the seeming conclusion to the protagonists' stint in dark ops, it was rather underwhelming. It didn't really deliver the tension it was going for and it wrapped up rather too cleanly. Just a meh from me.
