Histoire
All Jared Martin had ever wanted was to be normal, which was already hard enough when he had to cope with Maggie, his hard-partying, gun-toting, literal witch of a mother, Indigenous teen life and his own addictions. When he wakes up naked, dangerously dehydrated and confused in the basement of his mom's old house in Kitimat, some of the people he loves - the ones who don't see the magic he attracts - just think he fell off the wagon after a tough year of sobriety. The truth for Jared is so much worse.

What a finale

I'm a little sad I binged the trilogy so fast, but it was hard to resist! I really appreciate the change in narrator: her reading really enhanced the story. I'll definitely be listening to more of Robinson's stories: what a phenomenal writer!

Histoire
In an effort to keep all forms of magic at bay, Jared, 17, has quit drugs and drinking. But his troubles are not over: now he's being stalked by David, his mom's ex - a preppy, khaki-wearing psycho with a proclivity for rib-breaking. And his mother, Maggie, a living, breathing badass as well as a witch, can't protect him like she used to because he's moved away from Kitimat to Vancouver for school. Even though he's got a year of sobriety under his belt (no thanks to his enabling, ever-partying mom), Jared also struggles with the temptation of drinking.

Imaginative story taking place in East Van
Évalué le: 2023-01-25
I could not stop listening. I love how the author weaves science, Indigenous storytelling and magic together all in the context of East Vancouver. The characters are complicated as real people are, and events are not predictable: my favorite combo! For the narrator, I was not confident in some of his pronunciations and sometimes it was very distracting. For example, there is a character that regularly says what I believe was meant to be "maman" (mom in French) but it was so strongly mispronounced, I'm not even sure that's what he was trying to say. All in all,a very enjoyable listen. Make sure to listen to the prior book in the series first!

Chi-miigwech for a wonderful story
Évalué le: 2022-10-09
I was so impressed with this story and it's telling. I found myself admiring the Donnas. She is smart, brave, an athlete, and stands up for her community. Throughout the eventful story, the author sprinkles perfect descriptions of specific feelings and ways of seeing something that would make me rewind just to enjoy hearing it again. I greatly appreciated the patient explaining of Anishinaabe culture and language. I appreciate how the heroine leads with her teachings, showing the reader alternate ways to approach events. Essential to the audio format, the narrator, Isabella Star LaBlanc, does an amazing performance that enhances the story with her artful storytelling. I loved hearing her speak in Ojibwemowin, as it brought the language to life in a way reading from the page would not have.

Histoire
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Careful, you might binge this one

I couldn't stop listening. I appreciated how the narrator moved between three languages with authenticity, and gave nuance to each character. I am sad I finished the book, but looking forward to reliving the story through the TV adaptation.

Excellent voice acting, excellent story

It was nice having different voice actors for the main characters. This made it easier to follow the story, and also brought the characters to life. The story is unique with great attention to detail. I was never quite sure what might happen next, right until the end.
