Histoire
Fifty years ago, a serial killer prowled the quiet city of London, Ontario, marking it as his hunting grounds. As young women and boys were abducted, raped, and murdered, residents of the area held their loved ones closer and closer, terrified of the monster - or monsters - stalking the streets. Homicide detective Dennis Alsop began hunting the killer in the 1960s, and he didn’t stop searching until his death 40 years later.

I’m not sure what the few reviews mentioning the narration being bad, I thought it was good. She does pronounce some “ou”s differently like ‘about’ but it’s barely noticeable and it’s not an act. I’m sure it’s not easy narrating a book and giving voices to a dozen or more people of both genders, different ages, etc. she did so in a way that wasn’t distracting.
The story is very thorough, and in some aspects I found it too thorough tbh. I would have covered the entire time span somewhat condensed like, then dove into each case in depth. This would help with the contextual aspects of cases more effectively imo. When it’s all spread out I found I didn’t compare the last cases as completely as I would have liked to.
The whole sections dedicated to distracting characters should have been barely mentioned in comparison. I think that wore me out to the story. I started turning out as once that part began, I was only waiting for it to get back on track. It’s clear the few people were dealing with issues like Munchausen’s syndrome.
Yet overall I really liked the book, and the writers style and skill. The bonus was how close the story was to their own life.

One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

Phenomenal voice acting
Évalué le: 2023-07-27
This story was decent, worth the time for sure. Yet the narration is second to none. I’ve never heard anyone do so many characters with each a unique and natural voice. I mean there probably people who can do impersonations and wildly different voices, but in an audiobook you don’t want multiple readers. You want it the way you’d hear it in your head while reading, sort to speak. Pardon the pun.

Histoire
"The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror..." So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders". It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year. What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong.

Very through, well constructed but quirky narration
Évalué le: 2023-07-24
I found this to be very complete, and it’s written with some style as to not read like a bland documentary. That makes it longer than it has to be and not simple to follow all the time.
While the narrator’s voice and voice acting are great, there was somewhat too much flare added to dictation. Coupled with the characters and narrator being quite dissimilar it’s comes off poorly at times. Yet it isn’t so bad that it’s distracting or annoying to where you can’t finish it.
I did find the writer’s opinions towards Dylan and Eric conveyed through what was written vs what wasn’t. It’s disappointing that investigators and psychologists opinions chosen, and is the sentiment of the majority, are so demonstrative towards the perpetrators. Yes they committed a heinous act, but it’s so obvious they were severely mentally disturbed, and essentially children.

This is my 4th or 5th in this series and this might be the worst. It’s hard to be too critical of the voice acting, as the script leaves them open to it, yet they also miss the mark imo.
Unless your phenomenal at suspending your sense of logic, you’ll be disappointed for sure.
“We’re being hunted by huge aliens we’ve never seen before, but we’re tired and need a nap in these suspended glass tubes protruding from an alien spacecraft”.
No joke.

Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online. This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.

This is the best of the Alien ones one here I’ve listened to so far (3 or 4).
The voice actors deserve a lot of credit and praise for this. The story as well. The rest haven’t seemed to be as connected to the movie series, and Covenant origins seems like a Tom Clancy type of story, made to fit an Alien theme.
Anyways, bravo. These ones make me want to keep my subscription, and as long as ones like this are in the plus catalog, I will. I find it way too hard to pick a book based on a short preview (usually just the foreword or first few paragraphs.

A good work of FICTION
Évalué le: 2023-05-13
Firstly it’s a story, and what’s actually sad is that people feel they need to make a stand against an artful, fictional story about an issue that would be fraught with moral and criminal consequences.
Yet if you can’t handle a story, then simply stop reading. You don’t need to protect society by condemning a fictional story as though it has some potential to cause harm to anyone. How many fictional stories of murder and madness are there that nobody claims as “glorifying violence” as though it might become real.
It’s the particulars of the characters romance unrealistic, dated and immoral? Yes it is. Yet it’s a fictional story, not unlike those with killer clowns, or flying dragons.
It’s characters are compelling and they story is engaging. Narrated excellently and very suited as an audiobook.
Listen, enjoy, or don’t and carry on with your life. The world doesn’t need protection from tasteful stories about controversial issues. Hence why society needs free speech laws, so caped crusaders don’t filter our bookshelves.

Over 13 months in 1976-1977, four children were abducted in the Detroit suburbs, each of them held for days before their still-warm bodies were dumped in the snow near public roadsides. The Oakland County Child Murders spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in US history. Yet after less than two years, the task force created to find the killer was shut down without naming a suspect.

The good and bad of humanity
Évalué le: 2023-04-03
This book is enormous in detail, yet it’s a matter of being thorough in a 40+ year old story. Set Williams is a saint and obviously one heck of an investigator.
It’s disgusting that money can / could buy you a free pass for raping children and imo all those involved in that should be convicted of manslaughter or worse.
It’s so hard to imagine losing a child, and losing one this way has to be maddening to say the least.
The book and narration can be hard to follow, mainly the who’s who and when and what. Like any story it has some bias, which can lead you deep into misinformation due to the complexity and compounding areas for estimation due to the lack of certainties.
All in all, a story that needs to be told and a great job of explaining such a convoluted tale.

With makeup and an affected Elvis pout, Tucson’s Charlie Schmid was a crude parody of a bad-boy heartthrob. In 1964, he still had a hold on girls who’d follow him anywhere. He murdered three of them. It was the dawn of the free-love movement - perfect for a magnetic madman who’d also foreshadow its end a few years later in the malignant charisma of Charles Manson. The inspiration for a classic story by Joyce Carol Oates, Schmid, the most bizarre serial killer of any era, was the epitome of a narcissist flattered into believing he could get away with murder.

I knew nothing of this man, and considering how bizarre he and the story is, is odd.
This is a very well written condensed story and great performance of narration. I could listen to many more of these stories, as I find many others suffer from detail overkill.

Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan. On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths.

Horrific story
Évalué le: 2023-02-07
The book is well written, and flows fine. It gets fairly intense at the climax, and I’m curious as to how much of the story if fiction. It’s loosely based on a true story from what I gather. Yet it’s written and narrated in a first person perspective account, and does so quite convincingly I thought. It built a good deal of suspense.
I suspect the narrator and writer is a smoker and the rare crackle noise is his lungs. It could be something else, but it’s certainly not some hard candy in his mouth as one reviewer stated. It’s barely noticeable, and if not for the comment I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. It’s certainly not frequent or annoying.

In 1984, John Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent white man in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was sent to Angola Prison and confined to his cell for 23 hours a day. However, Thompson adamantly proclaimed his innocence and just needed lawyers who believed that his trial had been mishandled and would step up to the plate against the powerful DA’s office. But who would fight for Thompson’s innocence when he didn’t have an alibi for the night of the murder and there were two key witnesses to confirm his guilt?

Profound and disturbing story
Évalué le: 2023-02-04
The story is immensely profound and the book is as thorough as possible. A bit too through in my opinion. It’s legal content makes it feel like a case study for law students. Yet you certainly aren’t left with questions as to the finer details.
Narration was excellent and very engaging.
