Utilizing the linguistic insights of her “witty and brilliant” (Blyth Roberson, author of America the Beautiful?) first book Wordslut and the sociological explorations of her breakout hit Cultish, Amanda Montell now turns her erudite eye to the inner workings of the human mind and its biases in her most personal and electrifying work yet.

Modern slice on cognitive biases
Évalué le: 2024-05-02
I came across this book during a podcast and thought I'd look it up. I suggested it for my book club and I am so excited for the next meeting to discuss! Amanda is not only a great writer and has the linguistic skills of a trained ninja! She also has a very pleasant audio voice as well. The new triple threat for the modern woman. Well informed, uses all the best words, and makes me feel I am smarter for listening. Thank you for writing such a great book that helps me make sense of the world we are living in. A thousand thumbs up, hearts, likes or whatever the most appropriate social media thing is. It's hard not to put a halo on Amanda but she has a small "h" hallo (to give her space to be human). I'm a culty follower for sure! #noPressureAmanda #HugeFanInTheBestWay

Histoire
In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

Great story but a little sad that SM seems...
Évalué le: 2024-01-03
I am a fan of Steve Martin's work. I grew up watching him. The book is well told and his standup stories are engaging. There is something about this story though that I find aloof. I can't quite put my finger on it though.

Why have history's greatest minds - from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson along with today's top performers, from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities - embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations.

Should choose modern narrators
Évalué le: 2023-11-05
I really want to like this book and purchase extra credits to get it as I’m a big fan of how Holiday modernizes the stoics, however, the narrator makes the content sound stale. It feels like a reading of the King James Bible.

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

Very well researched
Évalué le: 2023-08-08
This is a very well researched book. The story telling for the most part was compelling and thought provoking. Steve Jobs was certainly a polarizing figure to work for. There were some parts of the story that went on a little too long and it seemed that the author was trying to convince us of a view point. It could have been edited down a little better but great story nonetheless.

Histoire
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Wow! So honest and unblinking. I never watched the Nickelodeon show but I am an adult fan of McCurdy now! How many complicit adults did it take to come to this?!? The mom is a character right from Stephen King!

Histoire
Evie Harlow is quite content running the quaint little bookshop she inherited from her father…or so she convinces herself anyway. It might not bring in much money, it's not very exciting, and it's not a very good way to meet eligible men, but Evie's always thought she was destined for spinsterhood, a dull life, and hard work.

The characters were lively and balanced. It has a bit more “my fair lady” than Cinderella but enjoyable all the same.

My first romance novel might as well been written by Chat GPT
Évalué le: 2023-07-03
I usually read biographies and business books and thought I could use a mental palate cleanse and wanted to change it up. Danielle Steel is a pretty big name so I thought I’d start there. The reviews looked great and away I went.
I get that this is escapism but my gawd!!! It was like a mental kid napping and being forced to someone’s play by play of an average golf game.
The characters are one dimensional, it drips of old world sexism without any of the actual grit of the real world. Descriptive words were completely over used and so many things were repetitive.
The rise and fall in action was a flat line with nothing lost and nothing gained by anyone. This book is bland and Pollyanna without any of the real charm. I highly question any of these reviews and am now very skeptical of them.

Histoire
What is the role of the writer? Prophet? High priest of art? Court jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain - or excuse! - their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as "gifted", who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift?

More on Writers than on Writing
Évalué le: 2023-06-30
There are some books I've really loved of Margaret Atwood's and some not so much. I found the listing of things a little tedious and while there are some writing gems in it, I was overall rather uninspired. Atwood is articulate and meaningful in her delivery, but even the fun and light moments seem ominous with the delivery. I was hoping for a bit more with this.
