Histoire
In May of 1963, Seattle mountaineer Jim Whittaker stepped into world history by becoming the first American to summit Mount Everest. More than 50 years later, he is still regarded as a seminal figure in North American mountaineering, as well as an astute businessman who helped create the outdoor recreation industry. A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond is Jim's courageous, no-punches-pulled autobiography and a look at a peripatetic, sometimes difficult life.

I loved this story.

I could not stop listening to this book. I love Himalaya stories and Jim’s memoir is adventure after adventure told with humility and heart. There is a line I love where a climber is asked about a mountain he just climbed and he replied with one word, “evil”. I will listen to this book every few years like I do with all my favourite books.

Histoire
In the spirit of Oliver Sacks Awakenings and the TV series House, Dr. Eric Manheimer's Twelve Patients is a memoir from the medical director of Bellevue Hospital that uses the plights of 12 very different patients - from dignitaries at the nearby UN, to supermax prisoners from Riker's Island, to illegal immigrants, and Wall Street tycoons - to illustrate larger societal issues.

I hope he is writing another book. This book is fabulous. Deep, rich and a beautiful recounting of a physician’s wonderful life at Bellevue. I loved the audible experience. Thank you, Eric.
