Histoire
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

If it weren't for Jim Dale reading this, I don't think I would have finished it. The details and description of the magical world, the circus, illusions etc was fascinating. The concept of jumping back and forth between two timelines was clever. However...the story in and of itself was slooooowwww and boooorrring. It felt like so much time and energy had been spent on describing the illusions etc, that the story became an afterthought. Who knows why the competition is even a thing to begin with, nobody knows what the rules are, and when/how it's supposed to end. I feel like the author didn't even know how to end it either, because (without spoiling the ending) the ending seemed bizarre. Good fantasy world, junk story.

Histoire
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

I know nothing about rowing but I loved this book! Written incredibly well, blending the life story of one of the boys, WWII history, and education about rowing, I was captivated. Edward Herrmann did a wonderful job narrating and I found myself searching for more books he has read.
