Histoire
More than 20 years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided alone. Ren has worked hard as the colony's 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment - and harboring a devastating secret.

A telltale heart

There’s a larger science fiction contact story here, but the main plot plays out in an internal struggle and several deceptions. Well told, but didn’t resonate with me at the time that I listened to it. The author is a clear speaker and imparts emotion to the roles.

Histoire
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Enjoyable but undermines itself

The setting and characters were interesting, and it was a fun listen overall. Unfortunately, the plot twists came so close together near the end and changed things up so much, I was left feeling that the events in the book didn't really matter to any of the characters in it.

Histoire
Adrian Tchaikovksy's critically acclaimed stand-alone novel Children of Time is the epic story of humanity's battle for survival on a terraformed planet. Who will inherit this new Earth? The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age - a world terraformed and prepared for human life. But all is not right in this new Eden.

Fantastic premise, uneven character work
Évalué le: 2018-09-17
The overall plot and human characters were far less interesting than the "others". The human half of the novel is a little dry. The protagonist does little but observe what's going on, and even thinks the things you wish he would have said in key scenes, but never voices it out loud. It's interesting, but ultimately frustrating.
The other side of the story, which I'll try not to give away here, is surprising and very imaginative. The characters have agency, and DO make choices that effect the rest of the book. I found myself far more invested in the "others", particularly Portia and Bianca, whos personalities evolve and weave around each other during the course of the novel.
