It takes a well written passage to bring tears to my eyes, and I appreciate that an author can illicit strong emotions through phrasing. This series has been a beautiful adventure, but "nothing lasts forever". I look forward to re-listening and re-reading all of Steven Brust's books for many years to come - like the works that the Khaavren Romances are inspired by, they're timeless.

While the novel is really wordy and dry at times, it's meant to be - having been "written" by a Dragaeren historian (and made me truly empathize with Vlad's opinions and frustrations with the race). It's quite a unique book, and has a great story with many tidbits that readers of the Taltos series will appreciate. I love every opportunity to get more of a peak into the vast world that Brust has created and I'm glad that I've begun listening to this mini-series after catching up on the Taltos books.

I listened to this trilogy simply to bask in hatred for it. After the first one, I had read that they get better. They do not.

The main character is constantly providing internal dialogue to explain things that she could have no way of knowing, she's dumb and contradictory, and the biggest Mary-Sue I've honestly ever had the displeasure of experiencing.

There are no stakes, there are no grey areas. Everyone who is bad is bad, everyone who is good is good. There are never any permanent repercussions for anything the "good" guys do. The villains are all mustache-twirling, predictable, and really unintelligent.

This entire trilogy felt like the author picked out the things she liked the most from a dozen fanfictions and then compiled them into whatever this is. It's clear that the author grew up privileged and hasn't had to experience many of things she's written about: severe trauma, PTSD, the impact of sexual assault, the loss of a parent, an abusive relationship. SJM is proof that if you ever think you could make it in the writing world, all you need is money, connections, and the ideas of better authors.
