I read this as a kid and came back to it as an adult and holy cow. I couldn’t finish it. The heroine is so “not like other girls” and thinks so poorly of women in general it gets on my nerves. The hero probably likes the smell of his own farts he is thinks so highly of himself. And the villain (only other character in the novel to be honest) is literally a serial rapist, sex trafficker and possibly a murderer. His character is just “evil” to the point of ridiculousness. He “breaks in” trafficked young women so that they will comply with their traffickers as like a fun little hobby. It just comes out of nowhere. He then gets chinese sex slaves and it is heavily implied kills them, with their bodies maybe being used as some kind of mystery meat. The thing though it is just slotted in with a beauty and the beast romance. The lack of motivation or characterization of the villain and the tonal whiplash you get switching from the A and B plots leaves you laughing at how over-the-top this guy is. From “Oh he has violent sex with sex workers,” to “he is having Chinese slave girls delivered to his house to rape, torture and then the bodies may be made into soup idk” just made me think : “I guess we’re doing that now.”
