Histoire
Weaving a latticework of different strands, moving back and forth through time, Josh Brolin captures a life marked by curiosity, pain, devotion, kindness, humor. He recounts an unconventional childhood far from Hollywood. Raised on a ranch in Paso Robles, California, he was surrounded as a child by the wolves, cougars, and other wild animals gathered by his fearless and explosive mother, Jane Agee Brolin. Her tragic, early death haunts this book, and the force of her unforgettable personality is felt throughout.

Had higher expectations

Josh is a brilliant writer which was why this feels like an unfair review… but, this feels less like a memoir and more like a string of movie captions with short, intermittent scenes. It’s chaotic and difficult to follow. I wanted to love it but even the poetic prose couldn’t win me over. It lacked fluidity, vulnerability and connectivity. Still, the dude can write and he’s a lovely narrator.

The beloved star of Friends takes us behind the scenes of the hit sitcom and his struggles with addiction in this candid, funny, and revelatory memoir that delivers a powerful message of hope and persistence. In an extraordinary story that only he could tell, Matthew Perry takes listeners onto the soundstage of the most successful sitcom of all time while opening up about his private struggles with addiction. Candid, self-aware, and told with his trademark humor, Perry vividly details his lifelong battle with the disease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Binged it

I am really into memoirs and was curious about this one. Crushed it in 3 days. I was pleased that he narrated it, you can’t tell someone else’s story, not like this. It’s pretty visceral, and you can feel his authenticity. It’s also fairly obvious he’s a narcissist, but he admits it, and so i felt it was a fairly raw and honest account of his experience. His story isn’t precious, and reminds us that no amount of money or fame can protect you from your demons. I applaud his bravery in revealing his story. It’s interesting and listening is painful but somehow satisfying, like picking a scab. It’s hard not to feel like he’s still alive because of an incredible amount of luck and privilege, but it also reveals that despite the most dire circumstances, that we all fundamentally have the desire to heal and to be free. It’s a well-written account of his life to date, with humour and struggle intertwined. I think this is the legacy he wanted to leave - beyond that of his character on Friends. It’s personal, and that is what makes a great memoir.
