Histoire
In “You Just Need to Lose Weight,” Aubrey Gordon equips listeners with the facts and figures to reframe myths about fatness in order to dismantle the anti-fat bias ingrained in how we think about and treat fat people. Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

Gordon does an amazing job of taking scientific research and breaking it down in a way that is digestible for the reader.

Really enjoyed this one, I’d argue it was better than The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Can’t wait to see what Turton does next!

Histoire
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Another poetic and beautiful retelling of Greek myth by Madeline Miller. I truly hope she writes 100 books in this style!

More anecdotal than scientific
Évalué le: 2023-05-03
Book is based more on anecdotes and opinions and the arguments felt a bit rushed at times. The stories are still sweet, interesting, and worth reading however it doesn’t feel as thought through as The Secret Life of Trees.
I still think it is worth the read as it is interesting and important to think about life through different animals eyes.

A fun read!
Évalué le: 2023-03-22
I would warn that this book includes several anecdotes about famous palaeontologists and the world of palaeontology and is not just a book of dinosaur facts. The book is still super fun and witty and tells the story of the dinosaurs in a fascinating and digestible way. Very worth the read!

Histoire
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism is neither a hand-wringing narrative of danger and decline nor a digital fairy tale. Rather, it offers a deeply reasoned and evocative examination of the contests over the next chapter of capitalism that will decide the meaning of information civilization in the 21st century. The stark issue at hand is whether we will be the masters of information and machines or its slaves.

This one’s for the academics
Évalué le: 2023-01-31
This book brings up some really fascinating and important points! However I think it’s important to point out that the author is a long standing Harvard professor and the book reads as one extremely long academic article. If you have experience with or enjoy consuming academic styles of writing or have a background in this subject matter I would definitely recommend this book! Unfortunately I don’t think the general masses will find the information in this book easy to consume which is sad as there are many important points for the public to consider.
The audio recording also has a bit of a robotic vibrato to it. It was easy to get over eventually but distracting at first.

In Sapiens, Dr. Yuval Noah Harari spans the whole of human history, from the very first humans to walk the earth to the radical — and sometimes devastating — breakthroughs of the Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific Revolutions. Drawing on insights from biology, anthropology, palaeontology, and economics, he explores how the currents of history have shaped our human societies, the animals and plants around us, and even our personalities.

Take with a grain of salt
Évalué le: 2023-01-07
If you approach this book with the attitude that this is the author’s interpretation of history and not 100% fact, than it’s a fascinating book full of ideas that will really make you think!
Definitely worth the read if you enjoy looking at new perspectives. The last two chapters on happiness and the future were a bit of a downer in my opinion. Be warned if you are someone who easily gets sent into existential crisis!
