Second Place Finishes and Bad Knees attempts to collate and perfect mini stories that place Gary’s youth into his failures, learning, acceptance, and successes long after he began to print. There are tales of a bunch of champion boys getting walloped by future Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Cardinals, of a short violinist who just wanted to dance with a tall blonde Double Bass player while the band played Begin the Bequine, and a skinny kid whose mighty curve balls compelled RubberArm to throw a high hard one hit for extra bases most of the time.
There are stories of good and bad decisions made by young and old and what can or should be learned as a result. In a nutshell, this book is about an older man looking back on his life and remembering how sweet it was. We think this book has something for listeners who like to know what kind of life others have had, who lived hard, made mistakes, tried to make amends, and want to leave a legacy—not just money.
