À propos de cet audio

Once Second Prince of the mightiest kingdom in the known world, Othrun now leads the last survivors of his exiled people into an uncertain future far across the Shimmering Sea from their ancestral home, now lost beneath the waves. With his Single God binding his knights to chivalric oaths, intent on wiping out idolatry and pagan worship, they will have to carve out a new kingdom on this mysterious continent that has for centuries been ravaged by warlords competing for supremacy and mages channeling the mystic powers of the elements, and unite the continent under godly rule.

With a troubled past, a cursed sword, and a mysterious spirit guiding him, Othrun means to be that ruler and conquer all. But with kingdoms fated on the edge of spears, alliances, and pagan magic, betrayal, doubt, and dangers await him at every turn. Othrun will be forced to confront the truths of all he believes in on his journey to become a king and a legend.

When one kingdom drowns, a new one must rise in its place. So begins the saga of that kingdom, and the man who would rule it all.

An amazing introduction to a vast world

I am so deeply impressed by P.L. Stuart's A Drowned Kingdom.

My favourite aspect of this book is P.L.'s prose, which is rich and reminiscent of the masters in historical fiction and fantasy, occasionally feeling biblical. He has excellent perspective control, and a strong sense of voice for the protagonist, Othrun.

Othrun is, of course, the key to this book. I've read a lot of commentary about how he is a unlikable character and it can be hard being in his head. I understand that critique, as he can be very obnoxious, racist, sexist, etc. However, all of this is deeply rooted in his culture. It makes perfect sense for a Prince of Atalantyx to think as he does, evidenced by his more extreme uncle.

Despite his flaws, I still felt very invested in Othrun. He does have redeeming characteristics, and one of the most important ones is his self-awareness and self reflection. His beliefs are challenged, and he is already showing hints of changing his perspectives. I think P.L is masterfully setting up his character to transform over the grand scope of this series. And beliefs aside, he is a driving force in the narrative, with a lot of agency.

This book is thematically rich, but also action packed. There wasn't a moment when it felt like the narrative was stalling. P.L is really damn good at writing action scenes, and there are more than enough to keep one satiated.

The world building is extensive and rich, full of atmosphere and history. P.L is laying the foundation for a great series to come, and the world he has created felt immediately immersive and interesting. I will say that there may have been a bit more time spent on history than I prefer, but this really is a personal preference.

Between the prose, the plot, the excellent action scenes, all the political maneuvering and family drama, this book gave me a lot of Warlord Chronicle vibes. That trilogy is one of my all time favourites, so that is no bad thing.

I will add that the audiobook narration for A Drowned Kingdom, done by Adam Kurton and Sean Polite is excellent.

In all, I really enjoyed my time with A Drowned Kingdom. The ending of this book has me itching to pick up book 2, and I can't wait to get my teeth into it.
