À propos de cet audio

During the 229-year period from 1485 to 1714, England transformed itself from a minor feudal state into what has been called "the first modern society" and emerged as the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world.

Those years hold a huge and captivating story. The English survived repeated epidemics and famines, one failed invasion and two successful ones, two civil wars, a series of violent religious reformations and counter-reformations, and confrontations with two of the most powerful monarchs on Earth, Louis XIV of France and Philip II of Spain. But they did much more than survive. They produced a great culture, giving the world the ideas of John Locke, the plays of Shakespeare, the wit of Swift, the poetry of Milton, the buildings of Christopher Wren, the science of Isaac Newton, and the King James Bible, to name a very few. And, despite the cruelty, bloodshed, and religious suppression they visited upon so many, they ultimately left behind something else: the political principles and ideals for which we-and so many of them - would work and die, and on which we would build our own nation.

Now you can watch this remarkable panorama of society, economics, religion, and politics unfold in a series of 48 transfixing lectures by a justifiably honored teacher who takes you into the lives of not only Britain's ruling royal houses, but the English people themselves, describing how they were born, worked, played, worshiped, fell in love, and died.

Cinematic in their presentation and detail - whether describing the likely thoughts of Charles I on the way to his execution or the overheard weeping of Queen Anne after she fired her Lord Treasurer - these lectures are as memorable as the history they describe.

Straight to the point and very comprehensible

I really enjoyed this course. I have listened to many podcasts about this period of English history and I thought he did a wonderful job at making sense of it all.

Mesmerizing!

This is a very long course but oh so worth every minute! Perfect for history buffs like me! It teaches us about details of life in that period that I hadn’t come across yet in my previous readings, over & above the historical facts.
Moreover, the listener can tell the professor, who narrates his own course, is ultra passionate about the subject matter. And he was an excellent narrator!
Thank you professor Bucholz! I learnt so much!

Great.. but Information Overload

This lecture series brings to mind an episode from my Undergraduate University career: Once, during a Paleontology course, the professor went through a survey of mammal-like ancestor reptiles - dozens of descriptions, dates of discovery, and Latin names from around the world. At one point, a classmate actually cried out "STOP!!" in frustration. The lecturer was shocked.. just staring at the student for a good 10 seconds.. before shrugging and simply going on with his endless catalogue.
Loyola University Professor Robert Bucholz similarly powers through a succession of Edwards, Richards, Henrys, Marys, Johns, Thomases, and Jameses. Admirably, Bucholz makes a tremendous effort to organize this lecture series into a consumable form - inserting judicious "aside" lectures, discussing contextual factors, and focussing on consequences - but the parade of figures is inevitably confusing. The appended PDF is actually *invaluable* for this presentation (unlike for most Teaching Company/Great Courses productions). The Syllabus-quality lecture summaries.. and especially Timeline,  Family Trees, and Biographies.. put the lessons in perspective.

[N.B. This is a course that would REQUIRE lecture-by-lecture handouts if it were delivered in a College Classroom].

Unfortunately - notwithstanding the truly excellent Course Materials - the delivery quality of this course is distinctly "average".
Professor Bucholz has great diction, a comfortable timbre, and an interested tone (and enjoys exemplary technical support).. but occasionally stumbles over words, reads at variable rates (too quickly at times - too slowly at others), and audibly turns pages as he speaks (ruining the illusion of sitting in a darkened lecture hall somewhere).

Taken altogether, 'A History Of England From The Tudors To The Stuarts' is an educational and interesting audiocourse
..but I rate this production 8 out of 10 stars. Dr. Bucholz's class would be much better in an in-person format.

If you can get it as a 'Plus' selection (free with your subscription) - as I did - it's worth your time. It's just that if they ask for a Credit, you should keep browsing.

The Great Courses are well named here

Fabulous stuff. How the author distilled this historical. time frame into 24 hrs is quite the challenge. How he managed to hold my attention over 48 lectures is a bloody marvel, well done sir.
