I love this book, but I'm biased to my culture. The most irksome thing is the performance. The reader, presumably British (by way of the narrators accent), doesn't seem to realize that the 1950 West Indian colonies have a different accent that the empires East Indian colonies. Hearing what's supposed to be a Trinidadian accent as a corny East Indian misrepresentation is embarassing and cringe to listen to.

Enough with the accents if you don't know what the hell you're doing.

The narrator our Indian accents on Trinidadian characters. the characters words are even writing in Trini twang. The author was Trinidadian, the story takes place in Trinidad. The characters have Indian names though so yea they must speak like that /s
